Getting Together and Doing the Impossible

The following is a write-up of my experience at the Child’s Play Charity Dinner Auction 2008. Those craving a more visual experience should view Child’s Play Charity Dinner Auction 2008: A Photo Diary.

One of the gaming events I look forward to attending each and every year is the Child’s Play Charity Dinner Auction, an annual affair hosted by the fun and generous people behind Penny Arcade. Held on the 4th Floor of the Washington Convention Center, this swanky fundraising dinner event not only benefits Child’s Play (a community based charity grown and nurtured from the game culture and industry) but is also just a delightful evening in general. Good company, delicious food, and the chance to get your hands on some of the most amazing video game-related items out there, all in the name of a good cause? I say hell yeah! In the name of the kids of course.

How Far That Little Candle Throws his Beams

3rd Annual Holiday Fund Raiser for Child’s Play

Having a child that once needed an extended stay in the hospital and witnessing firsthand how valuable seemingly insignificant distractions are, Child’s Play is at the top of my list of philanthropic organizations I actively support. A gamer-focused charity that provides toys, games, books, and other miscellaneous items for sick kids in children’s hospitals across North America (and the world), attending their Charity Dinner Auction is one of my most favorite events to frequent every year.

Even if you can’t make it to their annual swanky affair, 8-Bit Brigade has a fun way to contribute to the worthy fund with their 3rd Annual Holiday Fundraiser. For a mere $5 donation, you can purchase a raffle ticket that gives you the opportunity to win everything from various Xbox Live Arcade titles to PlayStation 3 games to a Special Edition of Rock Band for the Xbox 360 (including a whole slew of plastic instrument-shaped peripherals). I happily donate a hefty package of my video game-themed cards to their prize pool every year so if you decide to try your luck at their raffle drawing, perhaps you’ll walk away with those! They are also hosting a Gaming Trivia Challenge (a trivia contest covering a variety of video game topics from the 8-bit classics of the 1980s up to recent releases) so go read the specifics and perhaps win a cool prize, all while supporting a worthy charity. The kiddos thank you.

Guest Article: Video Games Live

I live in a rather small city that is not large enough to attract bigger name events. While we do get Snoop Dogg on the rare occasion, any tour with limited stops does not grace us with their presence. That is why I haven’t had the pleasure of attending Video Games Live, an one-of-a-kind immersive experience featuring music from the most recognizable and iconic video games of all time. Thousands of people have enjoyed this event that initially debuted back in 2005 but if you haven’t made your way there yet, you can live vicariously through the following write-up. Enjoy Halcylon’s tale of his recent adventures at Video Games Live. I’m pretty sure it’s the next best thing to actually being there.

When I was told that my birthday gift from my friend Cathy would be extraordinary, I had no idea what I could be in for. Strippers? Boob jobs for all the girls I know? I had no idea… until I saw the ticket for Video Games Live.

I couldn’t believe it! Any excuse is a good excuse to go to the famous Chicago Theatre, but now there was an added bonus of listening to video game-themed music live! I had heard of this concert through word of mouth and made a promise to myself to go some time. For the past three years, however, I’ve failed to follow up with it. This year, thanks to the tenacity of my friend and my overdeveloped love for video games, I went.

Are You Fighting Like a Girl?

fight like a girl tournament

I’m spending my day reffing the 4 v. 4 matches in the 3rd Annual Fight Like a Girl Charity Tournament today. I reffed the FFA portion yesterday, which was an absolute blast, and will be participating in the 2 v. 2 against Bungie later this evening. If you are participating as well, leave me a comment telling me how your experience was!
