October 2007 was an awesome era for Halo 3-themed faceplates. Early that month we saw three different themes, Master Chief in gold, Legendary in copper, and Covenant in blue. The latter part of the month brought us a classic green Finish the Fight plate along with a brightly colored Prophet of Regret offering. All of them were creative, unique, and more than visually appealing. Then along came November with no Halo-themed faceplates. I shed many a tears. December also hurt with the gaping void of my favorite seven foot tall Spartan. By the time January arrived, I was hardened to the pain and only felt slightly bitter. With one cursory glance this latest faceplate manages to erase the pain and suffering from the last four Halo-free faceplate months.

This Xbox 360 faceplate will appeal to the vast majority of Master Chief fans with its classic Halo green coloring, the simple Halo 3 logo, and the adorable little Grunt adorning the power button. And think about it this way too, with each faceplate made with a different character we get a step closer to a Cortana one. Because you know it’s coming. After we are done celebrating the Grunt birthday of course.

SpaceGhost2K makes amazing faceplates, there is no doubt about it. My favorites of his however are the ones that have texture and dimension. He is phenomenal at mixing various elements into his designs that are visually appealing. His latest faceplate does just that.

This plate was inspired by the toy diorama of the Dharma Initiative Hatch. The figures, hatch and plants were all taken from the diorama and worked into the faceplate design. The hatch is held over the power button by a gummy material used for hanging posters. It can be removed without leaving any residue, so you can use the power button. The gummy material can also be put on the opposite side of the hatch if you want to display the “QUARANTINE” text on the inside of the door. The power on button and the glow from the ring of light can be seen through the window of the door and around the edges.

If Cooper Lawrence had an Xbox 360, I bet this would be her faceplate. The focal point on this Mass Effect-themed faceplate is the mother of all achievements. What exactly was unlocked? Apparently you “nailed the blue chick”. And if that wasn’t enough, you got a pretty 25 points to add to your gamerscore as well. If only, right?

It’s no secret that I absolutely adore the work of custom Xbox 360 faceplate creator SpaceGhost2K. Unfortunately for him someone may be taking over his highly coveted spot though. Who is the current mover and shaker in the designing faceplates world? Well that would be his mom. Apparently she is such a fan of his work that she decided to give it a go herself. Her medium of choice? BLING. Finally, a woman after my own heart.

The pictures are of the same plate, one with the flash on (so you can gaze adoringly upon the light reflecting off the brilliantly cut crystals) and the other with the flash off. This faceplate has a black background so it would look best on an Elite. As I have the plain ol’ white box, I guess I will have to wait for another option. Perhaps it will have pink in it. On a side note, can you believe I made it through this whole article without a “your mom” joke? Someone give me a medal.

I grew up playing with My Little Pony and Strawberry Shortcake (along with Transformers any time my brother was out of the house). Any female gamer that grew up in the same decade will love this faceplate. The younger generation probably will as well with the comeback many of these toys are enjoying these days. Hopefully the younger ones appreciate it as much as I do, although I doubt it.
