The official Rock Band drum set is noisy, unattractive, and flimsy at best. Thankfully there have been an abundance of mods designed for both aesthetic and durability purposes. This particular mod is definitely one of the most impressive ones I have seen to date.
Featuring beautiful window screen mesh heads, this wooden Rock Band drum set is more than easy on the eyes. EDrums.info has a complete tutorial with detailed instructions (including pictures) both for the drum kit and also the drum rack so you can try your hand at making it if you so desire. While I have the desire, I certainly don’t have the skill so I will just have to picture these gorgeous drums while I pound furiously away on my less than optimal ones. Curses.
While I am not a negative person, I do consider myself a realist so I readily admit there are certain things I will never be able to accomplish in my lifetime. Passing Through the Fire and Flames on Guitar Hero III is one of those things. I could practice that nasty intro one thousand times a day for five million years straight and I still would never see anything higher than a four percent completion rate. It’s just the way it is. After watching this video, I am thankful that Mario Paint is not a playable game the same way Guitar Hero is because I clearly wouldn’t be able to pass it on this cute little musical game either.

Raining Blood, a Slayer song featured on Guitar Hero 3, is the bane of my gaming existence. I have battled this nightmarish tune several times over and failed each and every time. I even unlocked the Blowin’ It achievement (fail any song 10 times) on this song. I think the only way I could ever beat it is by using the special guitar featured on this clever t-shirt.

This simple but funny t-shirt features a guitar shaped controller with one big button. No more ridiculous hammer-ons and pull-offs. No more getting pinky cramps from stretching too far for the orange button. No more failing absolutely ridiculous songs like Raining Blood. While almost $25 is a bit steep for a t-shirt in my opinion, the design is almost cute enough to make me consider it. Almost.
I have seen some interesting covers meant for quieting down the obnoxiously loud banging of the Rock Band drums. Some are made of foam and felt and others are crocheted and could double as hats. This is the first set I have seen though that is actually more than four boring primary colored circles.

These absolutely adorable mushroom drum pads were lovingly crafted by Jennifer and Vance of Behold the Mundane. The only way they could be more awesome is if they could actually be activated as power-ups. How cool would it be if one of them kept your piece of shit guitar’s strum bar from breaking? Or if another one made your crappy drum set pedal not break after using it all of two times? Or better yet, what if one of them made you sound halfway decent when you were singing? I can’t say if I would purchase these because then I would have to admit whether or not I actually own this game, and I would never willingly give Sigafoos that pleasure. So instead I will just say these are pure win and leave it at that.
In my defense, I would like to say that I truly like this song. I was in the beginning stages of puberty when this pop song was originally released (that’s right, I’m not afraid of dating myself!) and I thought he was the man. In fact, I may still think he’s the man but I’m not telling. Now please bring this song to the Marketplace, just make sure it is for Rock Band. I need to be able to belt the catchy lyrics out at the top of my lungs while strumming this very fun guitar piece.
Holy shit, it’s a song with female vocals for Rock Band. Yes, I know it’s technically sung by a computer but whatever, I’ll take what I can get. In case you missed it, “Still Alive”, the catchy song that plays during Portal’s credits, is the newest downloadable content for (almost) everybody’s favorite music game. At the very low price of zero Microsoft Points (that equals zero dollars for people who don’t know the current conversion rates), you can download it at your convenience as it is not a limited time offer. That’s right, I’ll still get it even though I am currently on vacation. I would have gotten it either way since I packed my hard drive in my suitcase but now I don’t have to worry about it. And yes, I take my hard drive with me when I go out of town. Don’t tell me you don’t do the same.
Some people are such complete and total bad asses that a neon green skull covered strap for their guitar shaped controller just doesn’t cut it. Thankfully there is now an option fit for a true Guitar Hero.
Rock stars looking for a unique way to support their guitar controller while standing up will love this chain maille guitar strap. Made from 16ga shiny bright aluminum, each end stays secured to your toy guitar “with a piece of leather fastened with an ultra bad stainless steel spike to a strong brass connector bar”. The seller says it won’t tarnish and that it is extremely lightweight so you can rock out for long periods of time without being unnecessarily weighed down. Want to customize it even further? Apparently you can choose rings of a specific color (for an additional charge) which may come in handy if you want to coordinate a pink strap with your pink plastic guitar shaped controller. Which some of us may want to do.
Guitar Hero and Rock Band both have a passionate group of followers who regularly play these games. Some of us can’t play a real instrument beyond the recorder that we learned in second grade. Others happen to be talented musicians in real life as well. If you know how to rock out on a real drum set or if you feel inclined to learn after all the hours you have spent on Rock Band, these are the drums for you.
