GameStop Employee Mike, We Salute You

When you bring up video game and entertainment software retailer GameStop, you are often faced of a barrage of complaints ranging from their notoriously low trade in prices to not carrying titles from older but still regularly used systems. Mike, better known as MGH1138 in the gaming world, has a different story to tell though about something that happened there just today. As told by him:

My buddy’s birthday is today. He likes playing Big Team Battle in Halo but he doesn’t have the map packs necessary to play them. Naturally, I preordered ODST for him. Today during my lunch break I get an email from GameStop. Their system crapped out and my preorder didn’t process. I had an “oh, shit” moment. I didn’t get this guy anything else for his birthday.

Sometimes it pays to avoid panic. I still had 45 minutes on my lunch break so I ran to my car and went to the nearest GameStop. It’s in Cumberland Mall in Atlanta, GA (right around the corner from where I work). As popular as ODST is going to be, I thought for sure that I’d be SOL and just wasting my time. I was somewhere between disappointed and furious.

I explained to that guy behind the counter, who, coincidentally, shares my name, that it was my friend’s birthday and that my preorder for him was canned by a system error. Not only did Mike have a copy to sell me, he hooked me up with the preorder Sgt. Johnson deal as well. He’s one hell of a guy, and I told him so. Everyone in the Atlanta area should buy their games from Mike at the GameStop in Cumberland Mall. He deserves it. He knows what customer service is.

Today we salute you, GameStop employee Mike from the Cumberland Mall location, for saving a fellow gamer’s birthday. Sure, it was a fuck up from your company that caused the situation in the first place but because of you, everything turned out ok. And because you’re so helpful Mike, I have a quick question. When I was promised a Johnson preorder bonus, I was expecting something totally different. You got anything special for me too by chance?

I don’t think there is any shortage of ODSTs. I saw 20+ on the shelves at my local Best Buy. Nice of him to throw in the Johnson though!

  7. MerryDragon says:

They failed to give Kato his promo code when he picked up his game last night, so he asked me to grab it for him… I was very careful to ask for the SGT. Johnson code, because I was afraid of what I’d be given if I asked for MAJOR Johnson…

  8. rowboat 000 says:

I saw tons of copies on the shelf today and they were just handing out Johnson codes. So, I’m not really sure how great this guy is.

  9. hypnocake says:

Lucky him. My dad went and got me it, WITH PREORDER, and no Johnson. Apparently a lot of retailers are handing them out. So, tomorrow after school, it’s bitchin time.

  10. Poopie McGhee says:

i like gamestop… i buy games from there all the time… their old used games for the 360 are pretty damn cheap

    • Cardo says:

Ebay Ebay Ebay… I’m tellin ya… you can get 2 used games from Ebay for the price of 1 from GameStop. I speak from experience.

  11. HellCat says:

  12. Kamarov says:

  13. SaboWolf says:

I pre-ordered ODST several weeks in advance, shipping to my house style. Got my Sgt. Johnson code via email MONDAY (lol) and got the game at my house today when I expected it tomorrow. GameStop in my area is actually pretty good… I have few complaints.

Still think it’s funny I got Sgt. Johnson the day before the game came out, though. >.<

  14. Tortacular says:

    I pre-ordered… on Monday.

Glad I waited, got a good trade-in deal.

This article needs a new headline. You must be slipping angel. How is this not “Mike gets Johnson from Gamestop Employee” ?

  15. KalamariKidd says:

Gamestop is handing out johnsons like Hotdog on a Stick! zing!

  16. Leeumm says:

Arg! I didn’t get Johnson and I’ve had it pre-ordered for a few months. Ah well, I probably wouldn’t have used him all that much anyways. I’m just glad I got the game.

    • suicidalkanoka says:

They’ll usually give it to you if you complain; they give Johnson so much, they actually sometimes forget about it. I haven’t tried playing “Halo” with my Johnson yet, but I hear you can get some really explosively awesome results if you can play with him right.

  17. Gil says:

well it’s good to know there are at least a few good GS employees out there.

  18. Graham says:

Pre-ordering is over rated. Just go to Target (or Wal-Mart) and pick up a copy. They’re never sold out of games especially not on release date. The Target near me must’ve had 50 copies of the game in their case and probably more in the back room. Plus, they give you a $5 gift card if you pre-order it for one dollar down.
