Halo-Themed Clothing and Accessories for Your Xbox 360 Avatar

xbox 360 avatar with halo shirtThere’s an Xbox LIVE Update coming in the near future (August 11th to be exact), and select fancy pants types have already been granted a sneak peek at what awaits the rest of us more common folk. The team at Kotaku was fortunate enough to get an early glimpse into the preview and did some exploring which resulted in the unearthing of several different Halo-themed adornments. These items, which are eagerly awaiting the opportunity to spruce up your Xbox 360 avatar, have prices ranging from 40microsoft points (for a ring) to 320microsoft points (for an RC Warthog). Check out pictures of the specific items along with their corresponding asking prices after the jump and then kindly tell me: Are there any items tempting enough for you to pay actual money for virtual clothing? I just don’t think I spend enough time with my avatar to make even a small monetary investment in her. Sorry pseudo-bs angel!

  1. Zoom says:

And let me guess, none of these are available for the female version of the avatar?

In any case, these are too expensive. Like I read in the comments section on Kotaku, avatar clothing and accessories should be “unlocked” by playing games. They should be mini-achievements, not mini-rip-offs.

    • Visitor at home says:

That would be a much greter system.

      • Visitor at home says:

Greater. Damnit. It’s early. Don’t mind me.

    • Mr Viper says:

Some of them will be. No doubt the ‘better’ stuff will be kept in the ‘store’ by Microsoft, for monies. Still, I think it would be awesome to unlock a crowbar or the signature orange suit as avatar clothing on completion of Half-Life: Episode 3.

      • Araknoros says:

if episde 3 is ever realeased, or talked about. and if it has been been then someone kill me now cause it totally slipped under my radar

        • Mr Viper says:

          If only…

        • FishType1 says:

Didnt you hear? Halo 3 ODST was released last week.

        • FishType1 says:

          And Episode 3.

    • Das Kalk says:

I was hearing some talk about unlocking game-specific costumes based on in-game achievements, which I think is a great way to promote people investing more time in games. Imagine if completing the Vidmaster challenge got your spartan Recon, but also your avatar.

    • El Capitaine says:

I may be wrong, as I’ve only seen videos of the new dash update, but isn’t this what “Avatar Awards” are?

    • Xx WkD BLuE xX says:

I was 1 of the people who filled out the survey a few weeks ago and recieved the trial of the new dashboard,i’ve bought a few clothes but i wanted to have a look and see what female clothes there were and i was surprised to find they had more clothing than for male avatars even though some pieces of clothing are suitable for the men,if you want to talk 2 me my gamertag is my name at the top of this post,RC warthog FTW!!!

  2. Oh no! I’d invest in you pseudo-bs angel. :)

  3. FishType1 says:

    Microsoft are so annoying.

    • FishType1 says:

And i’d rather have a real RC Warthog then an imaginary one.

      • ya feelin lucky, punk? says:

there makin that and a hornet. check amazon(Preordering)

  4. HellCat says:

Spending my money on worthless clothes that make my ‘virtual’ avatar look cool and do nothing else. Clearly if people think this is cool we might as well just stop leaving the house and use our avatars to ‘hang’. I’m going to buy DLC and Arcade games, but maybe the impulse buy. But i won’t shop till i drop

    • sleepingdragon80 says:

I agree its rather dumb to sell virtual clothes, but people like me who have their gamer pics set for their avatar and dont have enough points to buy a video or DLC could get into this. I know I could.

  5. Odessa-086 says:

Nothing cool ever gets released for the female avatars. Plus, paying…for clothing of your digital self? Of your not-so-accurate and not-so-great digital self? What a ripoff.

  6. Someone says:

why don’t they sell them all together, or even better, for free!

    • Captain Spark says:

This is Microsoft you’re talking about.

  7. Christian says:

I will be definetly be getting some of these, including the RC Warthog…

    • Zwooosh says:

Congratulation you’re one of the 10 people that will buy these rippoffs :D

      • HellCat says:

Agreed what will you do with it anyway?

        • Adam says:

I’ll also buy them, just because I can. Also I hope they do release female versions of these =P

  8. I thought you meant that the avatar would actually be able to dress like Master Chief! I’ve been out of the video game loop for so long. Last game I’ve played was Fallout 3 a couple of weeks back. I would definitely consider the Steampunk look for my avatar.

  9. Leeumm says:

I’d love to say “this is way too expensive, I’m not spending money on this shit,” but I know something will peak my interest, and I’ll end up buying it, and then regret it later.

    • Poopie McGhee says:

today, i saw the GoW2 COG Suit…I Might Get that if i Have Money To Throw Away…NOT The Helmet tho, Cause I Like To Live Through An Entire Game… HAHAHA!!! (inflection on the last “HA”)

  10. Its Fun Time says:

I’ve got like 70 points left.. Damn..

    • soulofaqua says:

You can buy the Spartan Laser Kill Ring! 8D BUUUUUY IT! M$ commands you to!

  11. soulofaqua says:

Although not included in your post about the new Avatar Marketplace there will also be other items for sale and one that puzzles me is that there will be a Black Bowler hat for sale(atleast for the guys and that matters to my point) but one is already available for free right now! Why buy it when you can get it for free? Why even put it on sale and even more importantly will the girls have it available to buy aswell? and wouldn’t you think it is ridiculous that the girls than would have to pay for an item that guys can enjoy for free!

  12. KalamariKidd says:

Suck it Microsoft! I am NEVER changing my cowboy outfit!

Das Kalk is right, MS should create achievements to unlock avatar items.

  13. the new easy says:

does the RC puma evun do anything?

    • dickbutt says:

Nope, just goes in circles around you. If you could control it around your dashboard i’d buy it just to mess around, but noooo.

    • Monkey_lord says:

No I bet it is just like those stupid chihuahua purse dogs, for looks nothing more.

  14. Rhamsey says:

yeah, im not paying real money for fake clothing.

  15. Ken Raves says:

Wow, it’s almost as laughable as the stuff they sell at the local hot topic; Give some bang for the buck, Microsoft.

    • Bryan Ojeda says:

at least your getting some REAL tangible stuff at Hot Topic.

  16. Sarge Tomzilla says:

I pay money for many things. I pay money to play on XBox Live. I pay money to buy games. I pay money to rent games. I pay money to buy downloadable content for games.

I do NOT pay money just to add a shirt to my avatar. Especially one that barely anybody pays any attention to at all.

Now, if they were selling these in real life, I would elevate it to a maybe(due to financial situation), but that’s only because I can actually get some use out of it. I would definately pay for a real UNSC cap, since that, well, just looks awesome.

  17. GeneralCupcakes says:

Great now they throw in all the good stuff that i have to pay for to dress up my virtual doll.

  18. Venus Envy says:

Unless someone bought this for me, I won’t be wasting any of my MS points on this shit. Rather than focus on clothing for avatars. I’d wish Bungie/Xbox would look at re-opening their store so real clothing items could be purchased. Can we say ass backwards?!

    • bs angel says:

I wish Bungie would reopen their store as well. I don’t even think they’ve given an update about that in ages.

  19. Mr Meyagi says:

i for will will probably indulge in this…but dont get me wrong, i understand what every one is saying…i just see it being no different than buying a theme for your dashboard or buying a set of gamer pictures. i see my self as a unique person and would therefor like to reflect that via my XBL expeirence

    • Mr Meyagi says:

      sorry about the typos…im tired

  20. LAZR Blade 14 says:

    See? What’d I tell you.
They’re milking the Halo franchise ’till its nipples fall off.

    • Rodrigo says:

dude, the halo franchise has only like 5 games(halo wars wasn’t made by bungie)and also, there’s clothing available from other game themes like gears 2 and bio shock,so their franchises are getting milked as well? think a bit about it bro. also, this stuff is cool, but useless and it’s another stupid way for micro$oft to steal our cash,DLC is interesting but paying for clothes for my avatar?WTF im not 4 years old to keep dressing a doll, even being funny watching the avatar play with the RC warthog

  21. Monkey_lord says:

Wow more useless shit for my avatar that I’ll not change, just because there is halo products that doesn’t mean that I’m spending for a pseudo-me. Microsoft rips off, and milks any money maker to death. Unless the RC warthog comes with a real life RC scorpion then no points for you. Plus I would rather have real clothes and stuff than a virtual.

  22. PiNOYxPWNAGE says:

That’s crazy shit. Paying for virtual clothing? Now that’s just getting crazy… Bill Gates already has enough monies.

  23. William Sparrow says:

I always thought that maybe when your character plays a game a trademark of that game would show up on your avatar. e.g. Spartan helmet for halo, cog tags for gow, lego toy for lego games etc. I dont really mind paying for the clothes but if it does not have any extra benefits than showing off then i doubt many people will by it.

    HoT sHot liKs jAM. yuM!

  24. vashkey says:

I’d be all over this if this stuff if it was going at reasonable prices.

    • Morio Kun says:

Agreed half the price would be good.

For $1 I can get an iPhone game that has more entertainment.

      • Poopie McGhee says:

or even some indie (formerly communist, sorry community) games… i found some that might actually be worth a dollar or two… the communist thing was a joke, in case anyone actually read that or cares… OH Shit this is a reply…. no, it makes sense as such, submit then…

  25. Anonymous says:

Too bad they won’t give weapons to the avatar, I’d actually pay for a shotgun or BR, or pay for the RC Hog if I could shoot other peoples avatars, or at least annoy the hell out of them. Come to think of it, I’d pay for an RC Hog in Real Life if it shot BBs out of the turret.

    • If you want to shoot other avatars your only bet right now is Madballs in… Babo: Invasion on XBLA. Although you don’t get to shoot up the complete body of other avatars you do get to lay waste to their heads. So yeah, if you really want to shoot up other peoples avatars there you go.

  26. DTA MoonDawg says:

RC Warthog? Can you say VROOM VROOM?

  27. A Deaf Boy says:

Real clothing costs enough. I’m not gonna buy virtual clothes too now.

    -.-

  28. DethPwn says:

Not to mention, if you watch your Avatar for ten minutes while he’s wearing this gear, he’ll start to teabag.

    • Poopie McGhee says:

Really? i’d buy it then just to him put his nut pixels in the air’s mouth

  29. Morio Kun says:

I say, all Halo fans should boycott the virtual avatar clothing and then it will send a message to Microsoft that players do not want to pay money for virtual clothing. Besides, M$ already has enough money, it’s not like they need more.

    • Poopie McGhee says:

that would never work… too many pre-pubescent boys trying to spend their parents money in as trivial as possible ways…

  30. Earth Kin says:

If only Bungie would open THEIR clothing store…of course, they’d end up understocked in the first 4 hours, but I needs teh merch.

  31. alex says:

the only thing i would consider buying is the ODST suit.

that’s it, none of this other crap.

oh and there is a “Avatar awards” section, so i’m assuming some achievements will unlock avatar stuff.

  32. Daizoren says:

I filled out the survey to get into the beta testing and I have to say, It’s very clear that some things will not be bought. I mean, paying 320 MS points for a virtual warthog that doesn’t do anything but go around you is not very appealing. But when you’re getting low on MS points and can’t afford to go buy more (say having only 40-80 MS points) that small amount for a shirt, or a ring might be appealing. I know for one that I hate having only a few MS points left without anything to buy. Also, the new awards system does allow you to unlock clothing and special props for your avatar by unlocking special achievements in game, so if you don’t want to spend money on something, you can always try to unlock it. I’m not sure however if something that is in the marketplace can be achieved. Say, paying the 320 MS points for the warthog, but also being able to achieve it when you reach a certain amount of points in Halo 3 or ODST when it releases. Either way, asking to pay for virtual wear is pretty low, but at the same time, when you have little to no MS points, its not a huge deal. There certainly are pros and cons to the idea.

  33. Anonymoose says:

I agree: there are pros and cons to this issue. I don’t like M$ ripping people off any more than anyone else does, and already think they rip people off way too much anyway. I also agree with Halo-milking.

However, a lot of things people are buying already (themes, gamer pics, even movies) are not “real” or “substantial” and will disappear the second your Xbox disappears.

We live in an increasingly virtual world. So there will be temptations to respond to that virtual world with virtual “perks” of some sort or another. However M$ should have lowered the prices and should also offer those without major $$ some sort of alternative – such as gaming for the items that others can buy. (Apparently, it’s been noted that you can earn “Awards” but will have to pay for these as well, which really makes no sense at all, does it?)

  34. krzystill says:

People. Seriously we’re only talking about a dollar here. Stop leaving the pennies you drop at the gas station on the ground and you’ll have a lightsaber in a week.
