In the previous episode, the sarge got taken/killed by a giant bug. And when they seen the 3 arrows, they said “PROMOTION TIME!”
I don’t get it either
Their almighty leader has been taken/killed/maimed/moved on or something ergo, visa vi, concordantly someone must be promoted to fill the gap… maybe.

That’s exactly what those arrows represent. And they’re called chevrons, not arrows.

Mind you that the real chevrons used in the U.S. military (Army or Marines to be exact) are very similar, just not as straight and pointy, but that is usually the symbol for enlisted grade.
