On this one, I had to vote for CE due to the fact I can and have beaten H3 on legendary and still cannot beat CE on legendary. The difficulty level of the original was so much higher on CE it’s not even funny. (Campaign is more important than multiplayer, imo.)

I disagree with you about the storyline. While it is true that you do kinda know what to expect, unlike in the first Halo, Halo 3 does pack along a TON of backstory and other plot-related material, namely the information found in the Terminals.

But if you’re talking about plot twists and the like, I agree. Halo 1 had ‘em, Halo 3, not so much.

Evolution=change over time
It is my belief that the change is for the better, in this case.
So, yes, despite the fact the Halo: Combat Evolved started the series, Halo 3 ended it and has made vast improvements on Halo.

Also, Fall of Reach started the line of Halo novels, but looking back and reading it again, the huge number of errors in it are extremely irritating. Of the three I have read (Fall of Reach, The Flood, and Ghosts of Onyx), I would have to say Ghosts of Onyx was the best, regardless of the fact that Fall of Reach was the first book in the series.
