Another Use for Your Master Chief Helmet

virtual reality Halo gaming helmet

A group of rather ingenious gamers over at Headplay, a website that specializes in developing unique optical and high-quality video processing technologies, recently took an existing optic piece, planted it inside a Master Chief helmet, and prototyped a virtual reality Halo gaming helmet. I’m sure a little more work than that went into it but unfortunately, beyond a few pictures and a fairly crappy video, details are light at this point. Potential however is humongous. Hit the jump and watch the short video while I go dust off my Master Chief Legendary Edition helmet. I knew that sucker would come in handy someday!

If that thing actually works well, hot damn I want four of those!

Although it wouldn’t be very helpful for players that have to look at the position of the buttons on the controller constantly.

Hang on I think I might be abit confuzzled. Is there like a mini tv installed in the helmet?
If not I must sound like the biggest idiot :P

    Oh well.

What next? A codpiece attachment for that authentic T-bagging experience? LOL

  3. PsycheDiver says:

I have a sudden urge to take a pic of myself naked with only the helmet covering my gear…

    @DeepCee

I’ve already got one of those *wink wink nudge nudge*

My friend has one of these. I’ve tried it out myself and it does work rather well. I prefer to use my nice, huge hdtv though. I like to see my environment crisp, ain’t that right angel? :-p.

P.S. He has a regular headgame visor, but it works to the same affect. And yes, you can still peek at other people’s button combos :-p.

  6. Hahaha YES! Uberdork it.

If it had a good, sharp screen in it, felt right, and was sold at a semi-decent price (I’m thinking maybe $500-$800, but that’s pushing it), then I would buy this. No question. Hell, if it cost $2000 I would buy this. I’m not sure I like the current build and how it’s pretty much the outer plastic lining with stuff in it, but if they could ever make one that actually fits right, hell yeah. I was trying to come up with a way to do it YEARS ago, back when I was playing Halo: Combat Evovled. I was thinking about the way it would fit, how you could make it for everyone, or at least a large audience (fitting is a big problem), and what type of screen to use. I’m still not sure of the resolution or the overall quality of the mini-screens in it, and it looks like they’re using the 2 goggle thing that was also in the Virta Boy (that seeing in all red thing Nintendo did). Still, even if it is a little hazy, that’s okay, as long as you enjoy yourself and really appreciate the product. I mean, when it comes to something like this, you can’t ask for too much more than that, can you?

As flimsy as the construction appears, this looks really cool. I’d love to give something like that a try.

  9. Ranger_000 says:

Looks like one of the Halo Halloween helmets vs the legendary helmet…

  10. WolfSarge says:

This company would make a ton of money upgrading people’s helmets for them. I just don’t think I’d be able to afford it, even though it would be the BEST HALO EXPERIENCE EVER.

seems to me that having a television so close to your eyes might be a little hard on the vision.

I actually have one of these. Not the helmet (killer idea by the way) but the Headplay inside. And I’m with RIFT send me two.

  14. VapidFrobie says:

What would be cool is if you took a couple Wii accelerometers and put them in the helmet to replace the right thumbstick. Where ever you look, the camera turns with you! It’s an idea I’ve had for years, but I lack the know how to do it. Someone please say something to these people!

  15. VapidFrobie says:

Heck, while you’re at it, put the trigger in a model assault rifle! Another sensor for melees–

    Dang.

  16. Kensai says:

And everyone at the 405th cringes at the massacre they are calling a Master Chief helmet…

    Cheers,
    Kensai

Easy boys, it’s just a toy. You’d think you’d be happy about being able to play dress up..lol. The thing with the gun Killer Idea. I’m going to post that idea on the Headplay site and see what they say.

  18. So… we’ve made some improvements and have started the process in adding an accelerometer to the helmet. Great idea VapidFrobie!! Check out the new video while your at it, headplay explains how they’ve come to construct the helmet.
