One Girl, Four Levels

trueskill equation

The majority of hardcore Halo fanatics have done more than their fair share of bitching about the difficulty and inconsistency with leveling up in ranked Halo 3 playlists. This particular shooter utilizes the Trueskill ranking system (a skill based ranking system for Xbox Live developed at Microsoft Research) which sometimes proves to be difficult to fully understand. We have all had experiences of winning ten games in a row without seeing a rank increase but then losing a single game and all the sudden leveling down. There is always the other side of the story though, which I encountered while playing Lone Wolves a few nights ago. While I’ve had the good fortune of increasing two levels at a time, I somehow jumped up an astonishing four ranks (22 to 26) in just one game (the game stats are available after the jump and you can confirm they were back to back by checking my recent games played page). So my question to you is this: What is the biggest rank jump you have seen in just one ranked game of Halo 3?

  2. Team Doubles, Ranked from a 13 to a 31 in one match, played one more game and then I decided to call it a night and turn off the xbox, apparently it was a glitch. Turned it on the following day to find myself back at 13, shucks :\.

I jumped from 1 to 3, which I was surprised at the first time I tried Lone Wolves

  7. I went up 4 levels from a 16 to a 20 in Team Swat. And another time in Team Doubles
I went from a 3 to a 9, I had 36 kills in this match. The ranking systems does have it’s inconsistencies but if a player went up in rank after every win, every player would be a level 50 and a 4 star General in a very short time.

  8. I don’t care too much about how ranking up works, but it would be nice if it stopped matching 22’s with Brigs and Generals so often. That frustrates my girlfriend sometimes.

See what happens when you don’t have teammates to stick granades on, you can actually stick them to the enemy. ;-)

It frustrates your girlfriend sometimes? It frustrates our group all the time. I’m the highest at a colonel, and the rest are majors and captains. Yet the lowest we consistently get are colonels with less common brigadiers and uncommon generals.

I know its because the hidden social skill of those guys are around ours, but that’s ludicrous. If a guy is a global brigadier, he’s gonna be good regardless and shouldn’t be dumped on people who aren’t as good as him.

Bungie seriously needs to rewrite the matching code to account for you global rank as well as your playlist trueskill. And needs to match up per number, not “Oh, I see you have 1 colonel in your group, so I’ll match you up with this group of *all* colonels”.

Some of the guys are mentioning glitches.. Which I can fully understand. I played team doubles when Halo 3 came out, as my ranked playlist of choice. I got up to level 33, then started to go down because I was carrying most of my team… So logic told me, “Helveck if you think you’re so good, go play Lone Wolves so no one weighs you down.”

So, I went from a level 16, to a level 40, in about 25 games. At one point, I skipped three levels I believe, and I skipped two levels at least two times… But I can’t help but guess sometimes the computer often does not update your rank, especially if you run into another game right away… so really you may have gone up and skipped two, and done it again the next game, but the system updated four ranks at once… That’s my only explaination. Either that, or you just kicked some serious fucking ass. So good job. And would a FR be accepted if I threw it your way, BS?

  14. I’ve really only had the occasional double up while in the 10’s. Other than that, no major ups.

30-35 in SWAT. The best part about it? After the game, I went from 30-33. We started to find a match again, before quitting out to play something else before one was found. My rank in the lobby? 35. I went up two levels without even being put into a game!

like others have said It happens sometimes when the game takes a while to update your rank – im guessing you where supposed to rank up before the game and since you won you ranked up for that game and for the games before.

heh it would suck if you where 1 win away from a 50 – you win but the game delayed the rank up, and you lost the net game – THAT would suck.

i played one game of doubles with a friend who just got live and he went from 1to 5 after we won against 2 generals – (we got lucky that 1 of them dropped out).

we lost all the games after that though heh

I think I went from a 1 to 10 in Team Doubles after one match. I know I have skipped a few say 1-5 in squad battle before. I think the large gaps occur when you first start playing a playlist.

It took me forever to get my 30 in lone wolves (last week) I would win or be in the top 4 for a few games then get stuck with oddball, or KotH and come in 5th and drop a level. I played a few games yesterday same thing got to 33 had a one bad game dropped back to a 32. It also depends on who you are matched against too. I would play against 35-33 when a 30 win and not rank up but as a 33 lost against a similar group and went down.

I do agree with Daffy that MM should be done on global ranks not playlist EXP. Although you find a match faster and playing against different level of players is good being matched against 40-50 level people when you are a 20 is not a ton of fun.

Although how you play in one ranked list is not necessarily an indicator of how you will perform in another. Getting matched against 50 Global rank (20 or 30 lone wolves) in lone wolves while you are trying to rank only frustrates players.

I was going to post a similar thread in the forum to see what others experience was. This saves me the time. Thanks.

In 13 team doubles games I managed to gain 26 levels. I’m not quite sure how that happened, though.

First time I played doubles I went from 1 to 7

But I’ve gone up 3 ranks from coming 3rd in lone wolves before!

My only skipped rank was jumping from 9 to 11 in Team Doubles because the other team quick 4 seconds into the game. Nobody fired a shot and I went up two ranks. Go figure.
