Halo 3: Recon Coming Fall 2009

halo 3 recon dropping and shocking

Those of you that guessed the Tokyo Game Show would be the setting for the newest Bungie announcement (i.e. everybody) can now officially perform the “I told you so” dance. Revealed during the Microsoft Keynote were the official details about a brand new Halo 3 campaign experience called “Halo 3: Recon.” The video, featuring an ODST Marine, is now available for download at Bungie.net. Along with the video is the mention that they will “have more to say later.” Damn, Fall 2009 is far away. Hopefully the more to say will include pushing that date up by a year. If you have adverse feelings towards downloading higher quality videos, feel free to take a gander at the crappy YouTube version after the jump along with reading the official scoop from Xbox.com. And if you know how to speed up time, you can go ahead and start that right now. kthxbai.

From Xbox.com:

To the delight of devoted fans across the world, at the Tokyo Game Show Microsoft debuted Halo 3: Recon, developed exclusively for Xbox 360 by acclaimed developer Bungie. This new chapter in the Halo saga lets you experience events leading up to the epic story told in Halo 3 through the eyes of a new hero in the Halo universe.

The stand-alone expansion, set to release in fall 2009, extends the award-winning Halo 3 experience with hours of new campaign excursions and multiplayer gameplay. In addition, attendees were given an all-new glimpse of the Xbox 360 exclusive strategy game Halo Wars from Ensemble Studios. The campaign mode provided a thrilling taste of the revolutionary gameplay and new perspective of the Halo universe. Enjoy the full experience when Halo Wars hits retailers in early 2009.

This new chapter in the Halo universe includes the following:

* All-new campaign content: The Halo 3: Recon campaign is an intriguing side story that takes place during the terrifying events leading up to the Master Chief’s return to New Mombasa in Halo 3. Experience the fate of Earth from the brand-new perspective of a special forces ODST (Orbital Drop Shock Trooper), adding a unique outlook and new gameplay elements to the events that unfold in the trilogy’s finale. While the feel of this new chapter greatly resembles that of previous Halo experiences, Halo 3: Recon will require you to employ more elements of stealth and cunning than ever before.

* Prepare to drop: Known for their courage, valor and, at times, insanity, ODSTs are among the fiercest UNSC soldiers, priding themselves on being the first unit deployed into hostile situations. While not as large or supernaturally gifted as their Spartan comrades, these “Hell Jumpers” more than compensate with their ferocious attitudes and unwavering nerve.

* Expanded multiplayer collection: No Halo experience would be complete without groundbreaking multiplayer content, and Halo 3: Recon gives fans more of what they love. With exclusive new maps and expanded Forge options, Xbox LIVE Gold members will find more multiplayer content than ever before with Halo 3: Recon.

* Ever-growing community options: Enjoy all the great Halo 3 technological innovations, including Saved Films, screenshots, Campaign Scoring, and four-player co-op. All of the new multiplayer maps fully support the Forge editor, offering endless gameplay customization possibilities.

Ethnocentric. I’ve changed that image a few times (just had a basic one to get the story up in a timely fashion) but am sticking with that one now.

What’s funny is that when I had posted all this stuff up on your thread about the first trailer, you know, the one asking “what’s it all about,” and people didn’t believe me… not that they should have, but I really do know some of the stuff behind the scenes. I sound like a pretentious dick, but I have to say it… “I told you so”… oh, and “you should have listened to me before”… hehe. Also, release date is Halo’s anniversary.

BTW: I did hear a theory that was similar if not on the nose with what this is about, and while i did think it was a good theory, i didn’t think it bungie would divulge so much info so soon. guess I was mistaken.

  23. My “told you so” involves the fact that it’s an ODST campaign, not the time of announcement.

I’m interested to see how the gameplay changes to accommodate the ODST’s strengths and weaknesses…

  24. I’m guessing basically the same concept as Ghost Recon, having green, yellow and red health. Each level of health would bear various effects, such as vision blur, slowed movement, decreased accuracy.

Jumping would probably not be something would do just to avoid a grenade or pass the time while walking long distances, but just to hop over obstacles, so rather an “environment action” button than jump (ala Ghost Recon, Gears and Army of Two).

Seeing as it’s still part of Halo 3, it will be interesting to see how they adapt the characteristics of a regular ODST to a game designed around a Spartan.

I hope the way the Superintendent AI seems to interact with the player through the environment is a big part of the game. I’m intrigued.

  28. Very good point Mace Windex. The way the music rose up as the large screen showed “Yellow Means Yield” really gave you an impression that it would be a large factor in the game. At least that’s what I think now. At the time it was just an awesome scene.

  37. I’m pretty sure there won’t be a multiplayer component. It’s a new “campaign experience”, an expansion pack. Halo 3 will keep it’s multiplayer the way it is.

I liked how at the end of the trailer, you could tell that the Superintendent knew to help the marine…he used the traffic signals to tell him to keep right…i hope he’s like cortana is to chief but to you in this game. That’s a grand idea!

Hot Damn! Bungie really does know how to keep the hype train rollin. The SMG in the ODSTs hands is by far, the most bad-ass weapon bungie could put in our hands so far. It almost looks as though the ODST could have Night-Vision/ Thermal Cameras in his helmet. If so, that would be SICK AS HELL!

It comes as know surprise that Bungie “Prepared To Drop” info right before the release of GOW2 and COD:WAW hit shelves. Although I feel the timing was more tactless than the Vader Apprentice’s spot in Soul Caliber IV before “Force Unleashed” came out, I am friggin’ psyched for this expansion. There’s no doubt that Bungie is the most involved with their players, but to be honest, the campaign felt like a throw-in compared to the multiplayer experience. I haven’t seen the new trailer yet, (cuz I have dial-up internet, so I have to see vids on my phone), but I’ve heard that it’s mind-blowing. Now, if the expansion included enemy A.I. in Forge and new perms, that would be mind-blowing. (Yes, I know, Bungie said no new perms, but still… Also, a replica Energy Sword will be released the same day of, guess what, GOW2).

Seriously though, I can’t wait for this game! Always been a fan of the ODSTs, and while we got more of a glimpse of them in H3 I am now willing to literally bend over for Bungie now that they’re giving us a campaign centered on them.

Like others I’m also really intrigued by the prospect of having the SI help you out during the game through the use of the city’s signs and whatnot. The music, as always, was just made of pure win. I’m still getting chills down my spine whenever I watch this trailer :D

  53. [...] Halo 3: ODST, along with allowing you to experience the battle from a completely different perspective than the overly familiar Spartan viewpoint we have all grown accustomed to, is also introducing a brand new cooperative campaign mode called Firefight. The gameplay will feature wave upon wave of Covenant enemies attacking your squad with the activation of Halo 3 skull modifiers automatically increasing the difficulty. It’s also worth noting that you will get a four character service tag in this Horde-esque mode. I’m calling ‘1337′ right now. I’ll leave ‘n00b’ for you suckers. [...]
