Straight-to-Video

bungie rocks

There is a reason why I continue to shower Bungie with my adoration and let me tell you, it’s not because of Splockets. Could there be a worse fucking weapon set than rockets and lasers? I think not. Lucky for them I can excuse their horrific taste in gametypes, especially when they are still bringing us phenomenal new features more than a year after Halo 3 was released. Announced yesterday in their Bungie Weekly Update is a new feature they will be adding to bu|\|gi3 pr0. (That’s Bungie Pro for all you n00bs.) Coming soon will be a “Render to Video” option where your short film clips (emphasis on short right now since they haven’t determined the specifics about length and quality yet) will undergo a magical process enabling them to be downloaded to your computer or viewable at Bungie.net. All you GameVee junkies should enjoy the newfound ease of sharing your “best stick EVAR!!!1!one!!” with the world. Since my specialty is more in the realm of homemade movies, I guess my double team videos will still go unshared. Curses. Hit the jump for the “Render to Video” specifics straight from Bungie’s mouth, then prepare to be a star.

From Bungie.net:

Hello again, Roger here with an update on the Bungie Pro subscription service we inaugurated a year ago. To recap, Bungie Pro allows subscribers expand their Halo 3 File Share from 6 slots and 25MB of storage to 24 slots and 250MB of storage, to the tune of 750 Spacebucks for the year, which is around 78 cents per month. Halo 3 file sharing has been tremendously popular, with over 53 million pieces of content shared online in the first year alone! That year is up for the first subscribers, which makes this a great time to announce a soon-to-arrive feature that we’re going to add to Bungie Pro.

And that new feature is? Render-to-video! At long last, you won’t need to have a video capture card to free your saved film from the confines of your Xbox. Integrated right into the Bungie.net file-sharing experience alongside current features like “Copy to My File Share” and “Download to Halo 3″ will be “Render to Video” where your short Saved Films or Film Clips (length and quantity to be determined) can come to life as a computer-playable WMV file which can be downloaded to your computer, or seen on Bungie.net alongside other game content like your Screenshots.

We’re still finalizing quite a few implementation details and trying to determine at what temperature a server melts into a pool of slag that will drip through the datacenter floor. So stay tuned over the next few weeks as we get those last details sorted out. In the mean time, enjoy the Title Update, and keep that great content on your file shares.

This is a great feature, but I’ll probably just stick with my capture card.

  2. Is this exclusive for Bungie Pro members? Or will it be released to us cheap people within a few months?

They’re calling it “an update on the Bungie Pro subscription service” so my best guess is that it’s exclusive to those members. I’d keep your eyes open for more details though as they iron out all the specifics.

  4. Um. The only thing I can remember about this blog is “homemade movies” and “double team videos”. Did I miss anything else?

For any of you Machinimators out there who are thinking this will replace a capture card, you’re wrong.

More than likely the videos will only be a like an exact replica of the video, so there will probably be like the timeline and stuff over the video.

i highly recommend sticking with a capture card.

I fear change. That’s why Bungie scares me.

I’m looking forward to this, subscribing to Bungie Pro feels much more worthwhile now =D

P.S-I kinda find splockets amusing =P
Shotty snipers on Boundless repeatedly in Boundless whilst I go for the vidmaster achievement, not so amusing…

Finally no more videos filmed on a home video camera with their little sisters walking in front of the screen on youtube.

Can’t even get by THIS without a sexually-themed comment.

Think you could slip that one by, did you? :)

Team Doubles and Team Slayer are my favorite playlists. The kids get so made when you hide for the win. Sometimes they will send messages trying to cuss you out, or they’ll just quit -_-

The only problem is for people doing machinima, recording the parts into short clips can take alot longer then just using a capture card to record everything. So it’ll only be useful for short game-play videos.

    Damn…

If I was actually good enough at Halo to put together some real quality clips, this might be enough for me to subscribe.

Well, I suppose. But I would assume that the overwhelmingly large majority of people who shelled out 800 MSP for Bungie Pro would also have done so for the Legendary Map Pack. My subscription is still good till like February or March.

And more than likely, you have no idea what you’re talking about. ;) You don’t know any more details than the rest of us.

  21. Machinimators will want to stick with a capture card anyway. They need more formats to work with than a compressed WMV file.
