Capable of Penetrating Multiple Vehicles

I am not a Halo superstar. There are a few areas I excel in (such as sticking plasma grenades on teammates’ backs) but for the most part I am a highly average player. As Jironimo and VA1OR discovered the other night when they were helping me with achievements, one of my biggest weaknesses is the Spartan Laser. Apparently if I have invincibility and I am flown directly next to a banshee I can hit it, otherwise I’m out of luck. In my never-ending quest for self improvement, I’ve started actively working on elevating my skills with this particular weapon.

I was playing Big Team Slayer on Valhalla a few days ago and the laser spawned at my feet. I grudgingly decided to pick it up and give it a go. The other team had just gotten a banshee in the air so I concentrated solely on aiming. I lined the target up, charged, and fired. Success! The enemy banshee went down in a gloriously impressive explosion. In a not so gloriously impressive explosion, my team’s hog also went down. Apparently they were in the same area which I neglected to note as I was so incredibly focused on the banshee. One kill, two betrayals. I guess progress is still progress though, right? Feel free to take a gander at my faux pax; it is located in Slot #1 of my File Share. The funniest thing about the 22 second clip is my Spartan’s obvious confusion after getting the double betrayal. If you don’t feel like watching my accidental team killing tendencies, have a gander at this video instead. It features five rather spectacular laser kills. The quality is typical YouTube shit but it’s still entertaining to see all those medals scroll ridiculously fast across the bottom of the screen. I’ll get there one day. Or not.

Shenanigans on the first 4. The last one is awesome.

  2. Mace Windex says:

Speaking of the Spartan Laser, the first time I had a Halo 3 LAN shindig with my (non Halo playing)friends, I told them you have to charge the Laser by pulling the right trigger as fast as you can until it fires.

  3. Scotty says:

Thats funny Windex! I’ve got some pretty good skills with the lazer I just have never gotten THAT lucky!

  4. mendicantbias00 says:

My fave Laser Kill is when I blasted a sniper who was camped at the top of the lake side spire on Valhalla while I was in the base on the opposite side. Definitely one of my favorite weapons. :D

  5. Drag0n D214 says:

Hey Bs how good whould you say you are on halo3? cuz maybe sometime i’d like to face you 1v1

  6. Drag0n D214 says:

and i had an awsome laserkill just lucky though i shot it at a warthog but just when it fires a copper comes by for an over kill LOL SANDTARP rules for easy laster kills

  7. Bauer22 says:

Ok this automatically loses points for the song. Did you guys know that you can use songs other then “Blow Me Away” in Halo videos?

  8. AusQB says:

I can destroy stationary turrets with the laser…

    *cough*

    *crickets*

    *tumbleweed*

  9. angel, don’t feel too bad about your skills with the Laser. My prowess with the Laser is often eclipsed by my monumental failures with it. As the screenshot linked below shows. http://www.bungie.net/stats/halo3/screenshot_viewer_popup.aspx?gamertag=GreySpark&ssid=54264315

In my attempt to take out a Brute Prowler on Avalanche, who happens to suddenly appear from behind that small snowy protrusion right behind the enemy vehicle? It’s a Warthog with two team mates, one of whom is bs angel. I have to admit the explosion was rather spectacular :)

  10. TheChrisD says:

One step forward, but two steps back :(

  11. Louis Wu says:

For what it’s worth – you’re not totally responsible for that betrayal; the Banshee played a HUGE role.

    http://files.smallbits.com/images/absolving_hawty.jpg

Its plasma blast lifted the front end of the hog up into your line of fire just before your blast went off; had it not been on one wheel like that, the laser would have passed right over the top of it, killing the Banshee and leaving your teammates unharmed.

  12. Louis Wu says:

To confirm, here’s the actual laser beam:

  13. Don’t worry we still love you :)

  14. Ragingterror says:

#1 is absolutely ridiculous… 6 kills and three destroyed vehicles with a single shot? MADNESS.

  15. Das Kalk says:

I still don’t even have a two for one, but I have to say my most amount of kills with the laser was a rather mediocre overkill. I’m not fancy, but I get the job done.

@ Mace Windex. The first match I played with a friend of mine, I told him tha the only way to kill someone was by hitting them from behind…LOL

  16. Ragingterror says:

By the way… it appears you dropped the ball this time, Hawty. I don’t see a single innuendo in that post. Perhaps you should have retitled the article, replacing the word “vehicle” with something slightly more suggestive, such as “targets” or “people”. I mean, given the development of your writing style here, it’s the least you could do, right?

    :P

  17. Morpheus says:

    I once got a two…for…one….

    *fails to cough*

  18. randomindex says:

At least you know your laser skills are below par (mine are too XD), unlike the people who run for it off the bat and never hit anything with it. I do my best to stay away from the laser myself. My teamkilling goes from like one to a million per game when I carry that around.

  19. Louis Wu says:

@Ragingterror: don’t worry, I’ve got her covered; check the title on the HBO newspost –

  20. snorkle256 says:

    Hahahahaha, penetrating

  21. AT-AT says:

Cool, but they were all pure luck. It seems I always get the smart people: they’re never stupid enough to drive vehicles that close together.

Also, I’m not sure how the multikill chain was continued on the last sandtrap one. It takes 3 seconds to charge and more than one second to cool down, which is longer than the maximum 4 seconds between kills.

  22. I think he got a kill off of an explosion in between shots, so that kept it going

  23. -S- says:

Here’s a fun game, look at all the title’s of articles angel has posted in the past week, and see how many of them can be used in sexual context

  24. Deadguy says:

    The SP laser hates me.

This is where it shot almost backwards to take me out. Bungie’s official word is that the SPLaser doesn’t Lock onto a target.. Shenanigans..
    Fileshare Slot

    (here’s a screenshot):
    Fileshare Slot

Here, a laser was visibly stopped and blocked by the cover I chose, but somehow an invisible beam still managed to fry me on the other side of the obstacle. Wonder if it just kinda’ locked onto me?
    Fileshare Slot

This time, rather than let me get behind cover, I was yanked out of a hole in the ground and summarily fried to a crisp. No Lock here, right?
    Fileshare Slot

Here was my first “almost” double kill with the laser. I “wounded” the second player, rather than killing them. I sure wish *I* could get wounded instead of dying just because somewhere on the map, the SP Laser was fired.
    Fileshare Slot

I lost the match because I was concentrating on the SP Laser. Unfortunately, there’s no lock when *I* use the gun.. maybe that’s what Bungie meant. ;)

Anyways.. I *DID* finally manage to get the achievement. If I can do it.. ANYONE can.

  25. bs angel says:

LOL, … Nice title on that hbo article Louis Wu. And you say I will be the death of you. Apparently it goes both ways!

Thanks for the pics. I didn’t realize the hog got lifted into the air like that. I was so, so confused when it happened.

What’s your score for the title game right now -S-? …

  26. Gilver says:

Those were some nice Splazer kills.
    They were mostly luck though…

I’m very good with the splazer, I can laser people from all the way across Sandtrap…individual people!
    I love it!

bs angel, if you need Splazer tips, gimme a yell, k?

  27. Well uh… I wish I could play against people who just blindly pile warthogs on top of each other.

4000+ splaser kills, and never have I seen shitty vehicle usage as I saw in this clip. The last shot was nice though.

  28. bs angel says:

I could always use tips Gilver!

At least you know your laser skills are below par (mine are too XD), unlike the people who run for it off the bat and never hit anything with it. I do my best to stay away from the laser myself. My teamkilling goes from like one to a million per game when I carry that around.

I’m the same way. If I know someone on my team is better at a particular weapon than I am, I am going to gladly let them have it. The downside of that is that improving with certain weapons just takes that much longer. I’ll keep trying, … :)

  29. Mercutio2000 says:

Just the sheer amount of video replay and screen capture of previous games shown merely on this thread tells me that we’ll still be playing this awesome game when [insert Bungie title here] 4 comes out.

FTW, bs angel. Love your site.

  30. -S- says:

    Well let’s see, we got:

    Protect the package
Hot and fresh out the kitchen
    Blue balls
    Double-stroke
    Little Ninja Dude
    Playing with yourself
    Quickies have their advantages
    They go down real good
    It’s so delicious and moist

…this is something we should tally up month by month! Oh and PS, laser kills were awesome

  31. Gilver says:

Well, to ANYONE wanting some tips, here are ones I just made up:

    1. Look sensitivity is critical. If you have it too high, your splazer will be bouncing all over hell’s half acre. Do a couple of custom games with a friend or two and turn your sensitivity down. once you get comfortable hitting a moving target, turn it up one at a time until you get back to your normal sensitivity.

    2. Don’t always be charging up your splazer. I know some find it useful, but that’s because they can hit an enemy after seeing him for a microsecond. Wait till you see your enemy out in the open and paint him. Half the time they won’t notice, and the other half, they won’t be able to do much anyways. Painting your target gives you a better bearing on where they are. Even from a distance, you’ll hit them often.

    3. Hit ANYTHING for practice. If the other team isn’t using the vehicles, try htting individual people. This will GREATLY aid you in targeting because you’ll be used to hitting the smaller targets. hitting bigger ones will be no problem.

    4. Stay on higher ground. Obviously this helps with your field of vision. But it also tells your team-mates “Hey! I’m using the splazer up here, stay out of my way!” Don’t worry so much about enemies though. A lot of the time, you’ll have your teammates distracting them.

    5. Speaking of enemies, stay close to your base. Don’t venture too far off unless you haven’t seen a soul…er virtual soul…in a few minutes. The reason is that you WILL be having your teammates spawning near you to protect you from eneme ies. They don’t get IN your way, thankfully. For example, on sandtrap, stay up on top of that stone ridge. (I’m talking the part across the gap from the hammer spawn) or way back on that same ridge depending on what team your on. Also, stay near an edge or a wall. That way if a guy is BRing you from somewhere, you can easily fall into cover.

These are just a few tips that I hope are helpful to you, bs angel. If you are having a specific problem that I haven’t convered, you can email me at RyBond007@hotmail.com, or just answer this comment. Whichever you prefer.

  32. Crazyeye0 says:

Ha, I was a natural with the laser the moment I icked it up =P
Then, just to reinforce my natural laser abilities I created “Madness Lasers”-which if I wasn’t so passionatley in love with the laser, would probably suck. 300% speed, low gravity and infinite ammo spartan lasers ^_^

Seriously-Madness Lasers on Snowbound-best laser practise ever, if you can put up with being pwned for a while. It made my friends better at it, after a few(lot of) games, I don’t see why it shouldn’t work with you BS!

P.S-Use the xoom and track your target, without that, long range laser combat will prove to be slightly difficuilt (Well, for me =P)

I’m always here to help you with your lasers =P

  33. Achiles1108 says:

I said it in game and I will say it again. You do realize that is going in my next vid right? :)

  34. Gilver says:

Yeah, I was a natural with a the laser, too.

That’s why my tips I posted were made up on the spot. I had to think about WHY I keep owning with the laser…

  35. noobZ says:

I used to be a savage with the spartan laser. I would only target individual people. It was great fun. If anyone ever killed me and took it, I would hunt them down in a blind rage until I had it back. lol

    I’m a huge jerk when I play =P

  36. :| Ahh….bs angel its been my goal since a couple weeks before pax to have a game with you.

  37. Sarge Tomzilla says:

We all have our weaknesses. Like my uncanny ability not to notice the teammate jumping in front of me as I fire a rocket at an enemy >.<

    Awesome vid by the way.

  38. Ragingterror says:

    @ Louis Wu

You, sir, may be a God among men. Well played.

  39. bs angel says:

I said it in game and I will say it again. You do realize that is going in my next vid right?

Or you could always not put it in your next video too. ;)

  40. Crazyeye0 says:

    Ha, Gilver.
I hardly need to think when I pick it up. Vallhalla, streight away into the mancannon, first into the fight, pick up the laser, and just think “Ooo a Banshee” then a few seconds later there’s a prety explosion and a cool looking medal scrolling across the screen ^_^

    Ha@Noobz
That’s just like me, I love targetting individual people, especially as there manconning out their base on Vallhalla and blasting them out the sky! ^_^
I also fight to get my laser back whenever I lose it, because I love it so much! =P
