The Unwritten Rules of “The Last Game”

the last game soap

Anybody who frequents the virtual battlefield of Halo 3 on a regular basis knows there is a certain set of unwritten rules that govern “The Last Game.” You know the situation I am talking about. You’re playing with a group of friends, it’s two in the morning, and you have to be up early the next day. You’re not ready to log off but you need a decent night’s rest. You say it’s your last game, but is it really? Here are the rules that must be followed after stating, “This is my last game.”

1. You may not leave on a loss.
If you say it’s your last game and then lose, you must stay for another game.

2. You may not break a potential winning streak.
If you say it’s your last game and then win, you must stay for another game.

3. You may not end with a poor performance.
If you say it’s your last game but perform poorly, you must stay for another game.

4. You may not leave on an undeserved victory.
If you say it’s your last game but the other team has one or more quitters, you must stay for another game.

5. You may not leave on a bad gametype.
If you say it’s your last game but it’s a bad gametype, you must stay for another game.

6. You may not leave on a bad map.
If you say it’s your last game but it’s a bad map, you must stay for another game.

7. You may not leave if everybody else is leaving one game later.
If you say it’s your last game but then everybody else in your party says they are going to play just one more, you must stay for another game.

8. You may not leave without a minimum one game warning.
If you neglect to state “This is my last game” in the pregame lobby of your intended last game, you must stay for another game.

9. If you say it’s your last game, it’s not your last game.
You might as well just accept that. Now go play Halo.

Hey bs angel! I think you’re missing that rule I told you about (that or a bloated version of one of those). “If you say it’s your last game, you have to stay for 20 more.” Or am I and half of my friends list the only people who do that? :(

Also: “7. You may not leave if everybody else is leaving one game later.”

But that “one game later” rule turns into 20 more for everyone! :P

I always forget that I said it’s my last game, and continue playing till I actually remember that I have to go.

Ah its so true, unfortunatly ive just realised a lot of those rules (commandments!), work together in such a way that you have to stay until you cant keep your eyes open – there have been many nights where i called last game only too have too easy a game, and then stayed longer to have too hard a game, with that cycle continuing for a few hours!

    ah the joys of halo

I CAN QUIT WHENEVER I WANT! I’m not addicted! I could leave any game, right away. I only stay playing and playing and playing and playing until 7a because I WANT to.

It’s not addiction, it’s choice. Yeah, that’s it. I’m completely fine. Nothing wrong with this over the top, addictive personality. Why? Are you saying I’m hooked? Are you out to get me too?!

*Sniffs and snorts violently, causing a bloody nose*

    Damn it! Not again… ;-)

Aw, man, looks like you can’t leave at all. In our group, we do have one rule, you call your leave in advance. You can’t finish a game and say I’m leaving.

  38. See the reason for these rules is that bs angel doesn’t know how to game at a reasonable hour.

  40. I was just going to say that the first two rules pretty much guaranteed that you’d never be able to stop playing, but I think rule 9 pretty clearly stated that… you know, just so there’s no confusion.

See the reason for these rules is that bs angel doesn’t know how to game at a reasonable hour.

Hey, I follow the same logic… but primarily because my work schedule–and by extension, my sleep schedule–has nothing to do with “reasonable hours”. >_<

  44. I always have followed my Anti-Golden rule of Halo:

Rule 10, unlike #9, says you may only Quit if you never tell anyone.

My favorite example of this: snuck to Sniper position behind Blue Base in Blood Gulch two-person niche. Guy I’ve been following says: “Hold this position.” Then quits, and I keep going a few more Rounds (Sniper).
