The Unwritten Rules of “The Last Game”
September 15, 2008 51 Comments

Anybody who frequents the virtual battlefield of Halo 3 on a regular basis knows there is a certain set of unwritten rules that govern “The Last Game.” You know the situation I am talking about. You’re playing with a group of friends, it’s two in the morning, and you have to be up early the next day. You’re not ready to log off but you need a decent night’s rest. You say it’s your last game, but is it really? Here are the rules that must be followed after stating, “This is my last game.”
1. You may not leave on a loss.
If you say it’s your last game and then lose, you must stay for another game.
2. You may not break a potential winning streak.
If you say it’s your last game and then win, you must stay for another game.
3. You may not end with a poor performance.
If you say it’s your last game but perform poorly, you must stay for another game.
4. You may not leave on an undeserved victory.
If you say it’s your last game but the other team has one or more quitters, you must stay for another game.
5. You may not leave on a bad gametype.
If you say it’s your last game but it’s a bad gametype, you must stay for another game.
6. You may not leave on a bad map.
If you say it’s your last game but it’s a bad map, you must stay for another game.
7. You may not leave if everybody else is leaving one game later.
If you say it’s your last game but then everybody else in your party says they are going to play just one more, you must stay for another game.
8. You may not leave without a minimum one game warning.
If you neglect to state “This is my last game” in the pregame lobby of your intended last game, you must stay for another game.
9. If you say it’s your last game, it’s not your last game.
You might as well just accept that. Now go play Halo.

FIRST COMMENT! I mean…ahem…you forgot to mention it’s only your last game when you pass out looking at hawt Cortana boobage, but I suppose that’s what was implied, so…

Now go play Halo.
=/ Stupid work….
On average I usually stay for another three or four games after saying “It’s my last game”.
It’s my last visit to the site….. I swear!
Ah, you’ll come back, this is a bad gametype
@ mendicantbias00
“=/ Stupid work….”
no, stupid school… =p
ha that was great being in SBG, this is something that happens frequently in our clan.
HAHA, that happens to me all the time, “hey guys im gonna go after this game” *plays the game and the other team quits* “ok that game sucks ill do one more.”
Penguinish, your Av rocks! \m/
Funny stuff.
Except I don’t play by those rules, and neither do you, because if we did we would never get sleep!
Hey bs angel! I think you’re missing that rule I told you about (that or a bloated version of one of those). “If you say it’s your last game, you have to stay for 20 more.” Or am I and half of my friends list the only people who do that? :(
Also: “7. You may not leave if everybody else is leaving one game later.”
But that “one game later” rule turns into 20 more for everyone! :P
I always forget that I said it’s my last game, and continue playing till I actually remember that I have to go.
Oddly enough….I follow most of those. But waking up the next morning…ugh.
Well, I usually more or less keep my word and stop one or two games after annoucing it’s my last one… What I didn’t mention is for how long I’d stop playing and get back online 5 mins later :P
Usually when it’s my last game…my mom MAKES me go :(
Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr…
these are true for me :\
So ehm…. what am I still doing here? *goes off to play Mercs 2*
I’m glad this is finally in writing.
Ok OK, now this is really my last visit to the site. I swear its true this time!!!
I live by these rules religiously
#10 You may not leave on a great performance
If you say it’s your last game, but you perform well, you must stay for another game
I have suffered from this ‘The Last Game’ problem, and have stated I would be playing my last game repeatedly until 5am or later several times.
Ah its so true, unfortunatly ive just realised a lot of those rules (commandments!), work together in such a way that you have to stay until you cant keep your eyes open – there have been many nights where i called last game only too have too easy a game, and then stayed longer to have too hard a game, with that cycle continuing for a few hours!
ah the joys of halo
I CAN QUIT WHENEVER I WANT! I’m not addicted! I could leave any game, right away. I only stay playing and playing and playing and playing until 7a because I WANT to.
It’s not addiction, it’s choice. Yeah, that’s it. I’m completely fine. Nothing wrong with this over the top, addictive personality. Why? Are you saying I’m hooked? Are you out to get me too?!
*Sniffs and snorts violently, causing a bloody nose*
Damn it! Not again… ;-)
This article is brilliant
Aw, man, looks like you can’t leave at all. In our group, we do have one rule, you call your leave in advance. You can’t finish a game and say I’m leaving.
i leave when my performance is poor more than 2 games in a row cause that usually means its not getting better
Wow, so true! Especially #9 ;-)
Yea, these unwritten rules are what kept me up to 5:00am with you guys…thanks :)
These should be engraved somewhere, perhaps some sort of stone tablet.
I’ve violated all these rules before. :D
Any time Predator! LOL, …
And Avateur, that evening of gaming is actually what inspired me to write this particular article. :)
Ok, I’m here again, I’ll check the site 2-3 more times and them I’m done for the day, I promise this tiem is for realz.
Don’t leave too quickly snorkle! I’ll have a new article up here within the hour and you probably don’t want to miss it.
Strict yet firm. So basically, you last game is the game that your xbox red rings or spontaneously combusts?

I keep checking now but where is the article? I’m going to start putting it in terms of time, 12 more minutes and then I am for sure gone until I can get home and F5 the site some more!
See the reason for these rules is that bs angel doesn’t know how to game at a reasonable hour.
“Why are you tired, it’s only 4AM!”
You may not leave bs angel. Ever.
I was just going to say that the first two rules pretty much guaranteed that you’d never be able to stop playing, but I think rule 9 pretty clearly stated that… you know, just so there’s no confusion.
See the reason for these rules is that bs angel doesn’t know how to game at a reasonable hour.
Hey, I follow the same logic… but primarily because my work schedule–and by extension, my sleep schedule–has nothing to do with “reasonable hours”. >_<
Haha. Glad I could be part of the inspiration for an article! :P
And MacPhisto, I totally agree with you. We are NOT addicted. *twitch, twitch*
so epicly true
I’m seriously printing these and putting them up on my wall.
I always have followed my Anti-Golden rule of Halo:
Rule 10, unlike #9, says you may only Quit if you never tell anyone.
My favorite example of this: snuck to Sniper position behind Blue Base in Blood Gulch two-person niche. Guy I’ve been following says: “Hold this position.” Then quits, and I keep going a few more Rounds (Sniper).
i also found this list works well with guitar hero. just one more song, really….
I do that a lot. I always say that I have to leave on a good win.
I have broke rule number two recently, but after 28 wins in a row I had to stop playing. It was 7 in the morning, I had enough.

It’s like you’ve written these about me, I swear that’s like every night for me during summer (unfortunetaly haha).
Most of these rules can be appied in the bed room as well…;) Remember no bad performances.
