Do you remember what you were doing approximately 355 days ago? I was sporting Cortana-esque blue hair, waiting in a horrendously long line at the local game store for my much anticipated copy of Halo 3 (the Legendary Edition of course), frightening all the people around me as I recited my always full arsenal of Halo-themed pick-up lines. It was a good thing I hadn’t discovered Spartan pr0n yet, otherwise they would have been even more traumatized. As Halo 3′s anniversary quickly approaches (ten days away for you fairweather fans), I thought it would be the perfect time to have a fun Halo-themed contest with an amazing Halo-themed prize.
While you only had to leave a comment to have a shot at my Ultimate Swag Bag, this contest will require a little more effort on your part. For those of you who covet a certain rare permutation of virtual Halo 3 armor, Bungie has so generously given me something extremely special to bestow upon one of you. So what is the contest exactly? Recreate a memorable scene from Halo: Combat Evolved or Halo 2 in the form of a Halo 3 screenshot. You can make it humorous or serious, simple or spectacular, regular sized or panoramic. But before you get started on your entry, hit the jump for all the contest specifics and for the prize information as well.
- Recreate a memorable scene from Halo: Combat Evolved or Halo 2 (campaign) in the form of a Halo 3 screenshot. Promotional images may not be used unless they are taken directly from the campaign.
- Any and all types of image editing are allowed and encouraged.
- You must use a Halo 3 screenshot that is available in your File Share as the base of your image.
- One entry per person.
- Send entries to GiveMeReconHawty@gmail.com. Please include your (valid) gamertag and a link to your File Share along with the name of the base screenshot.
- Entries will be accepted until Monday, September 22nd at 11:59 pm PST with the winner being announced on September 25th. The winner will then have three days to respond via email to accept the prize.
- Entries will be judged by a selected panel of respected and upstanding members of the Halo 3 community.

All I will be looking at is the final image without factoring in if it is photoshopped or not. And just fyi, one of my favorite screenshots ever is the recreation of the Halo CE boxart, which is completely unaltered.
That’s a relief, the scene I was thinking about would feel a little empty without Grunts and Jackals.

Does the memorable scene have to be from the story mode or can it be from multiplayer?
Memorable, I’d assume, would be something that everyone has seen in the games or in production. While multiplayer was produced, not everyone experienced or saw the same thing. My recommendation would be to keep with the story/world, and not with multiplayer…

Not because I only have Elements 6, but I will try to keep mine as authentic as possible. Also, if we make it a panorama, can we just have the most prominent image in our file share? I’m not going to replace half a dozen screenshots.
That’s fine AusQB. The reason why I am requesting it be in the File Share is because too many times I get links and the shot has fallen out of the recent queue. This way it’s still there for me to verify. If you are doing a panorama, one is more than sufficient. :)

I think I may already have my submission ready using a screenshot I took back in April, but at least I have a week to think about it.

This would help me out a lot in my machinima works, totes entering.
Questions though:
The whole thing I made is pretty much custom except for the visual focus which is a Spartan Render i got from Halo 3. After spending about 6 hours on it today, getting feedback and improving [none of my ratings have been below 4 :) ] I have been wondering about a few things.
1.) Do we have to send in the original screenshot from the Campaign that we are mocking it off of?
2.) Will you display 2nd and 3rd place people even if they don’t win?
3.) When submitting, should we tell you what the scene is from?
4.) If minor alters are made to the scene [I.E. like an arms position because it was extremely hard to get a perfect falling animation frame] will it count off?
5.) When judging the screenshots, are you looking for more of a professional aspect, creative aspect, originality, or all three?

You dont need Photoshop. You don’t need to edit the pictures at all, you can do it all 100% in Halo 3. But if you want to edit it a bit then use GIMP it’s similar to photoshop and its FREE!

It can be any moment from the first two campaigns that you found memorable. It does not have to be a cutscene, but it certainly can be if you like.
Recon isn’t region specific as far as I know so I don’t see why you couldn’t participate. :)

Ah come on. I just spent all night sprucing up a great shot and then I realize it’s not on my file share or 360 hard drive.
Oh well, I’ll just cry myself to sleep and work on either recreating that shot or making a new one tomorrow.
Plus it took a while to make mine i had to stand in the right spot for 3 screenshots then edit them together so they look like one screenshot.

Oh and one last question, does the pic have to be in the file share or is recent screenshots under Hi-Res Screenshots okay?
I prefer File Share so it doesn’t drop out of the gallery. If you leave it only in your recent screenshots, just make sure it’s still there in six days.

Screenshots seem to stick around in Bungie’s back-end server storage and be available for a long time. For example, the first Halo 3 screenshot I ever took is still available from bungie.net even though it’s almost a year old. You have know the screenshot ID or have save the link from the pop-up window for viewing the screenshot to get at it, but it should still be in there even if it doesn’t show up in recent screenshots.
Not that putting it in your file share is a bad idea, but just in case this helps anyone.
So since we are using both editing software and the game screemshots. Would we need to send you the edited screenshot AND the file share link?

I have another clarifying question: Do we need to submit a link to the image from the original game (Halo 1/2) in addition to the unmodified Halo 3 screenshot? I have in mind a particular campaign moment from Halo 1 that I can’t find a screenshot for. I suppose I could dig through the h.b.o forums for XLNC’s instructions on taking screenshots with HaloPC and try to get one… but that seems like a lot of extra work.
(It’s probably a moot point as I don’t think I’ll have time to really work on a good submission anyway.)

Yes! That was my exact goal with this contest. I am not going to personally remember every little detail of every individual scene. I am looking more for images that capture the essence of the more memorable parts of the story line.

I’m proud of my entry. It took like 10 hours and everyone that has seen it has rated between 4.5 and 5. I think I picked a pretty good choice of scene to create. It took a crap load of editing though. Especially since the only thing in the scene i recreated that Is even visible in halo 3 is well, the spartan. :D

I think the point of the contest is specifically recreations of memorable moments in Halo 1 and 2, so there aren’t any exceptions.
But Halo 3 is part of the trilogy… So some parts could count as “memorable moments”, but it’s fine I already have my idea, it is just hard to realize.

I fail at Photoshop…
This is going to be hard.
I’ve worked for hours on mine, and am still not done. I let a select few see it beforehand, and they critique it. I then tweek it, re submit it, and get critiqued again. I’ve had 3 test images so far.
I will not settle for anything less than perfection, for bs angel deserves nothing less than perfection.

My post was directed above you JKF, in answer to your problem you are to recreate a memorable scene from halo 1/2 in Halo 3. Then you take a picture of it and you can modify it if you so choose.

Once again JFK, you don’t need to show a source. If you can’t find a picture then just type out what its based on in the email. The actual picture is in halo 3.
You’d have to search around for screenshots of it on the internet, or play your favorite moment again. Also, if what you want to do is from a cutscene, HBO has a great cutscene library that you should definitely take a look at!
Why does it matter if the picture you base your shot off has the HUD on it? The purpose of this contest is to reproduce a scene that you like from the old games in Halo 3. So you can use theater mode on your recreation.
If you have HaloPC and are willing to put in some prep time, you might want to check out XLNC’s guide to taking HUDless screenshots. He posted a lot of excellent ones taken from HaloPC using these methods on the h.b.o forums years ago. A bunch of them are collected over at rampancy.net though I’m pretty sure there are even more in the h.b.o forum archives if you go digging.

in regards to multiple people working on the image, I believe only one recon is being given out. So if 5 people were working on it, only one would get recon. And I think only one person will win, no runner up winners.

How could anyone recreate a memorable scene in Halo 2 for ex. in campaign using Halo 3? A screen shot from Halo 2 with a unique background or any background for that matter, would not be the same background in Halo 3? As the campaign/story is different??? I’m confused??? The base (starting point) of your screenshot must be from Halo 3 (campaign, forge, multiplayer). You may edit the image as you wish with any sort of photo editing software. I’m not even going to answer the rest because you didn’t read the rules or the following 216 comments.

I hate screenshot contests where photo editing is allowed, because it basically keeps many people from participating. You can still make a wicked screenshot without it, but photoshop pros can do simply amazing things with an already good screenshot.

the quality of photoshop doesnt matter much when making a pic. if the image is good it will be noticed. regarding mine though, i haven’t been told that is against the rules yet (ive even recieved an email thanking me for my submission). possible an automatic one though

The base Halo 3 screenshot can be taken from Forge, matchmaking, Campaign, whatever you want. The final image needs to depict a scene from Halo CE’s or 2′s campaign.
Alpha, the picture can be taken in any of Halo 3′s gametypes. Meanwhile, to your second picture the base picture will be fine she has said on multiple occasions.

Yes, the finished product MUST be sent in the email. Otherwise it will be counted as an uncompleted entry and you will be disqualified.

As has been stated several times, any sort of promotional images (game covers, posters, trailers, etc.) can only be re-created if they depict a scene from the campaign of Halo or Halo 2.
As an example, I believe that this image would be acceptable, but this image would not fit the criteria as it doesn’t really depict anything from the game.

If you have received a confirmation email, your image is already logged somewhere so that wouldn’t be helpful. If you haven’t received a confirmation email, feel free to ahead and redo your submission with that information. :)
It will still be judged fairly because all of the judges have been playing this series since the beginning so a well done scene will be recognized even without a comparison image. :)

I don’t know for sure, so my answer is just speculation. I think the base image must be from Halo 3, so you could not start with an image of Halo 2. However, if you took a picture from Halo 3 and began with it as the background, then edited or modified everything except for a flower. That would be okay.

It’s up to you. I mean, It doesn’t really matter. Someone could make an amazing unedited screenshot that out dues an edit one. It’s your call.

Just don’t draw attention to yourself, or don’t put it in your fileshare until the end of the contest draws near (of course you have to grab the image to submit, but then you could remove it until the time approacheth).

Someone could spend hours making a stick figure, making each piece bit by bit and it suck. While someone else could spend 20 minutes on one and have more things happening in the image. So really, time doesn’t matter, It’s the image quality and quantity that does.

If you submit during the day, I’m running about eight hours or less for officially receiving it. If you submit during the night, add on another eight hours or so. :)

So let me get this straight, as long as the image captures the essence of something experienced its still ok? I tried to get my image to look exact but when I was making it I couldnt help but express the emotions felt at that time when I first saw the cinematic.
I used a part of the game (Halo CE) that was a great moment, turned it around (so you could see Chief) and used different camera angles than were shown in the game. The contest is not to recreate something perfectly, but recreate it as you saw it (you’re interpretation)…
Example – In Halo 3, You drive the warthog from the rear view over the fires of the dying ring…
If you flipped it around or did an in car view, that would be an interpretation.

Yeah I kind of did that but with a little more added to it. I wanted the judges to feel something special like I did back when I played Halo: CE. Back then when a character died you felt attached.

just go to download.com and u can use 30 day demo of photoshop cs3 or something… note: you do have to download first, the it’ll give you the 30 day demo

That’s a good question. If I where doing this contest. I would compare images. One by one. If one is better than the other in my view, then i would move onto the next image and compare. That way you end with the best. So, If two where the same, whomever did it better would win in my opinion.

Its not going to be the first submission of an image that gets picked. It’ll most likely be the best overall one.

Hey, me again, Hawty. Just wondering, will there only be one Recon armor winner in this contest? It’d be really cool if you gave out to more than one like in the Photoshop Frankie competition that Bungie hosted. I believe 7-8 sets of recon armor were given out. I’m not asking for that many, but at least more than one. It would suck to see two entries like neck and neck and only one person getting Recon. :( Just my two cents.

Another good picture editing tool is gimp 2.4. its wat i used and my pic is looking good with it.
takes about 20mins to an hour to download if ur on a 521kb/second download rate . Its a great programme and u can make ur own logos and Stuff 10/10

Heh, I’ve been working on it like mad since Monday. I dedicated all my free time and my sleep time (I don’t know how many hours that makes but I can assume easily more than 60) to my screenshot and I still haven’t finished. I plan to subit this today or tomorrow when I finish the final corrections.

So we can’t take a screen shot from a multiplayer map me and my best friends made all day even though they had no chance of winning recon armor? I don’t know you but could you tell Bungie how great of a job they did on Halo 3, my gamer tag is War Hawk II7 if You took time to see the snapshot in my file share called Stale Mate.
I am keeping it open actually for that exact reason. I don’t want it to spill into my other articles so I’m hoping they will contain it here if I don’t close it. I’ll do a few things behind the scenes to clean it up.

I know you said you can make a panorama, and use multiple images, but I made mine into what looks like a single page out of a comic, adding a bit of dramatic flair to the overall composition. The reason I ask is because technically its three different pictures woven into one, and I wanted to know if thats ok.

Err thanks but no thanks for the reply containing zero information on my question. I quoted an example so i could receive a yes or no answer, not a maybe, if or could. Please could you reclarify? To me although that wallpaper is not actually from campaign, it depicts a scene from it, and personally stuff like that was far more memorable than anything else.

If my image characteristically reflects what the person is experiencing and it but contains almost none of the scenery connected to the original, will it still be considered as depicting the original moment?
Give yourself room for creativity but remember it needs to instantly recognizable by the judges without a comparison image.

Agreed, but you have to understand this contest isn’t about producing a side by side perfect image from the two games. Its about recreating a memorable scene. If it were creating a memorable image then that argument may have more weight. It really comes down to how the judges feel about the image – Does it represent how you felt when you played it? Does it incorporate screenshots from Halo 3 well?
True, Recon wasn’t in Halo CE, but that doesn’t mean the image is ineligible. It just means the artist took a different route in recreating something.

I’m not BS, but i see a few things the judges could get a little upset about.
One the Masterchief isn’t the right armor and he isn’t the center of the frame.
Two, the elites all have Assault rifles secondary. Anyone who read the books knows the covenant would never get desparate enough to use human weapons
Three, its not entirely apparent that its from the second level. It would’ve been good to have a warthog nearby and have the master chief sneaking up on them.
Otherwise its fairly good.
The armor perm certainly wasn’t in campaign, but that just makes it inaccurate but not ineligible

I recreated a scene from halo 2′s campaign, but it’s more of a cinematic moment. Very memorable though, and I did use halo 3 screenshots I took as bases.

I noticed, but it didn’t really give the scene what it needed. I mean, you should have gotten rid of the hud and made a totally new image using that as a reference to look at, not to paste over like I’ve seen some other entries do,
i guess ur rite actualy, but believe me, i’ve tried finding a way to put a prophet from halo 3 in it and do that, but it ended up more complicated than it needed to be, so i had to make do with this.

In my opinion you should have went with that complicated route and make it the best it can be. But what’s done is done. Also, The 25th is on thursday not friday. :)

That’s my entry. I thought the Rangers were the coolest class out of all Elites, and the most fun to fight, since you had to deal with up, down, side to side, instead of just one elite on the ground.

Actually guys, I made it with the Recon Armour because… it was supposed to be a Halo 1, or 2 themed base image remade into Halo 3. Halo 3 has Recon in it so I thought it would be cool that way we would know that it was remade in Halo 3.
Also Bs Angel said “You can take a screenshot from multiplayer, custom, Forge, whatever is fine.” So why would mine be disqualified because of it having Recon in it, and it not being in Campaign? Well I never seen anything that said it couldn’t have Recon in it, and Bs said it could be from anything. So you tell me why I am “disqualified.”

Using Recon doesn’t disqualify you man. As long as you recreated a memorable scene, however you did it, you’re good to go! :)

The Box Art isn’t going to be accepted…I sent a message to Hawty asking if remaking the Halo 2 Map Pack box art would be acceptable and she said no…as a matter of fact here is the exact message…

MFone since recon never once occured in Halo CE i’m assuming that you will be disqualified, but it really is iffy. Its like the promotional image of MC and the ODST troopers on the beach. We just Can’t know for certain until the contest is over. Still…Halcylon and Atomic….Jesus christ those are awesome.

I sure do with that Hawty would tell me if I will be disqualified or not. Also the reason that I did it with Recon in is, is because when I recreated the “Halo 3 thing” Halo 3 has recon in it so I thought that it would just make it different if it was there.
I don’t have time to look up individual submissions right now to let you know if they are valid or not, I’m sorry. I will tell you using recon in your shot does not disqualify you. Hope that helps!

There should be more contests like this, not just for Recon, but just recreating your favorite Halo moments from either campaign or multiplayer. It’s fun to see how people saw the campaign, and how they depicted it through PhotoShop.

Does recon give u speical powers, faster, jump higher, shot faster/ further or more head shots, hell what about even smarter? Why does everyone want it so bad? Ive seen people beg, lie, cheat and send them stupid snapshots to 150,000 people in order to get it. WTF is the BIG deal, with Recon Armor?!? By the way congrats on getting your Recon.
