But I Pressed B First

I’ve seen numerous Halo 3 games result in a tie. I’ve also experienced a few instances where the final kill count went over the 50 point cap (particularly in snipers where a single bullet is capable of traveling through multiple people). But I have never in my almost 2,000 Halo 3 multiplayer games finished with a Team Slayer score of 50-50, which is exactly what happened to a friend of mine last night. In my experience when you hit that upper 40s tie, one of the teams instantly turns into a pack of pussies and cowers in the corner for the remainder of the game. Or maybe that’s just my modus operandi. Regardless, the deciding encounter in this particular game unsurprisingly came down to dual melee deaths. Fix your shit already Bungie! Oh wait, you already did. Nevermind.

Heh. I like the melee system, at least now I dont feel like i got cheated somehow. Plus its pretty comical to watch two half-ton Spartan soldiers run into each other and then bounce off like they were rubber.
Though I am probably the only one. =)
Things like that happen to me all the time…
The other night I got 2 no-scope double kills in the same match… by accident, lol.
We really ought to play sometime. I would love to hear the satisfying crunch of one of your spike grenade going into the back of my skull when we’re on the same team, lmao!

She is way more accurate with Plasma Grenades. And the high pitched whine they emit right before the explode is eerily calming.
;) :P
I don’t mind the mutual beatdowns, it suceeds in making Halo 12 million times more calming than wacking someone who happens to have 1mm more shield than you, and instead of hearing the satisfying cracking caused by smashing someones skull/spine in, you ended up flying to the other side of Narrows =/
Mutual Beatdowns can still be somewhat annoying, yet at least it makes me less scared to smack people in the face =P
You guys and your beatdown obsession! LOL, … What about the 50-50 tie? Anybody else have a game end with that score?
Never seen a 50-50 tie on a Team Slayer match before, though I wish I had been there, I would have probably bust a gut laughing. 50-50 tie caused by a Double KO. Brilliant!
I played a double team game back in April, where it ended in a tied 25-25 and on my list of games it shows both me and my team mate got 2nd. Then on the stat page it says 1st for both teams.

This was with the new melee system as well.
I’ve never had a game end in a 50-50 tie, but I had a neutral assault game once where we had to score the bomb four times to win. It was weird. It gave our third bomb plant to the other team. We had to go back and get another score to finish it off. Good thing we were winning 2-1 at the time it gave one to the other team. I have the video saved. I never could figure out what the hell happened. It was very weird.
i’ve had the bomb thing happened…
also ive had a slayer in 50-51 while i was at work…it was a sniper double kill and a sniper kill at the same time…it still ended in a tie
I was one of the guys in a 50-50 beatdown tie once. It was at 49-49 and everybody yelled “hide!”, but I saw a supposedly easy target. I got no more than 2 bullets off before he uncannily noticed me and fired back. I was hoping I had enough bullets in to win, but I was fine with a tie.
Also, I’ve seen a bunch of explosions kill an enemy and a friend (who was under enemy fire, granting them the kill [enemy betrayals, I call them]) for a 50-50 tie.
i do that all the time angel. at least every night if not twice… oh wait, 50-50 ties? no, never did that. thats pretty cool though. and about that other stuff… forget what i said
Beatdowns are more fun thsn BRing you see, which is why I love them so much, but not when I have to beat someone down after shotgunning someone in the face at point blank rangem it’s a shotgun! not a mauler!
Yeah, I too like beatdowns. I love the sound of the crack and controller rumble. Heck, anything that’s visceral I like (so I love all manners of explosives and things that indirectly cause explosions [like the laser]), especially chainsawing in Gears of War.
I had a 50-50 tie on the weekend.
Not only that, we were playing players with a much higher rank than us and we went DOWN three ranks afterwards.
Thanks TrueSkill!
I’ve had a few games which over time the scores keep being the same then somehow they fall apart and it ends no where near a tie. I’ve also had a game which ended 51-37. It was due to rockets, 2 kills right at the exact same time resulting in a score of 51.
I’ve never had a tie in my halo 3 life (i think).
Don’t get me started on the ranking system in halo 3 TTL Toracular.
I mean it, I seem to be Skill level locked on Team slayer. I range around 19-20 but can never get above 20 i keep trying and neally always getting a postive in k/d ratio but still no skill level up.
It really pisses me off.
that is very odd, a tie with beatdowns? i thought that was taken out
I’ve never experienced it in H3. I think I did in H2, but those are fuzzy memories.
I do remember going 50-50 tie in H1 LAN years ago. It was epic as I recall.
@ aperture- if you skill seems to be stuck at 19-20 it probably means your tru skill is 19-20 range…just a guess
The TrueSkill system has a lot of flaws. I’m not going to turn this thread into a debate on that because angel doesn’t care about ranks (unless the horrendous GOLD BARS OF DEATH are near).
Gold on silver!?!?! BS will have your head!
Hey, don’t dis those gold bars. They look pretty cool.
I think I’ve seen that once before, but I can’t remember when. I like the beatdown system.
The ranking system is a bit unfair. I don’t care about the number besides my name, but for some reason Halo 3 has allowed my girlfriend to rank up to a 15 in Lone Wolves and seems to keep her there, where she usually gets slaughtered, which is frustrating. She should really be around a 7 or an 8 for competitive and fair games.
She isn’t dropping back down at all?
I just had a spree where I went from 21-26, doing really well.
Then i wasnt doing so hot and dropped back down to a 23.
Maybe the AU2 will help with that.
All the AU2 will do is give you a playlist specific rank icon which is solely determined by how much EXP you earn in that playlist (like the Ranks in COD4). Anything that uses the TrueSkill system is not the fault of the game its in. If you feel like lodging complaints, they should go to MS.
Bungie also mentioned some behind the scenes stuff that we won’t necessarily notice. I was just guessing that maybe something in the update will help with issues like Daffy’s. Personally, ranking up or down doesn’t matter to me, I am not good enough to worry about it! :D
I got an explanation for the stuck player and how the system works……
The Trueskill system is a player skill rating system for Xbox Live. Halo 3 uses a version of the Trueskill system in order to make the matches fairly even.
Trueskill assigns skills on a normal distribution (bell curve, Gaussian). The Trueskill system has two main variables to consider. They are your player skill level (Mu) and your uncertainty factor (Sigma).
Mu is an approximation of your skill level based upon past performance. Win games to raise Mu, and lose games to lower Mu.
Sigma is the numerical representation of the range in which your true skill could lie. Play really consistently, and you have a low Sigma. Play streakily, and you have a higher Sigma.
After a win, the Trueskill system adjusts your skill ranking based upon the Mu and Sigma of all the players in the game. We’ll go deeper into how much it is adjusted later.
Trueskill systems use a conservative ranking Ranking = mu – (K * Sigma) so your skill is likely to be higher than the actual number represented in your Halo 3 highest skill level. K is a constant assigned an arbitrary value by the developers of the game.
Myth Busting
Trueskill DOES NOT take into evaluation performances inside the game. The ONLY statistics that Trueskill takes from a game are the Mu and Sigma values of all the players, and how you placed.
This means that out of all of these statistics:
Getting the MVP
Having a High K/D ratio
Getting the most medals
Skill levels of those you killed / killed you
Weapons you used
Headshots
Captures, detonations, stops, ousts, etc.
NONE of them matter when calculating the Mu increase/decrease. Any link between any of these and the skill ratings are purely correlative and not causative.
For example. When I play Team Slayer with my buddies on my alternate gamertag, much of the time I end up carrying the team. I created this tag to play with my buddies, and as such, have only ever played on that party with that tag. I ranked up to the level of my friends within 20 or so games, while it had taken them 50 to 100 games to reach their level. My friends thought that it was because of my frequent MVP status and my high K/D ratio that I leveled up so fast.
Wrong. I leveled up fast because A) I initially had a very high Sigma, making my Mu more variable after each win, B) Starting out at a 1 and playing people in the mid teens gave me a considerable boost every time I won, and C) We won more frequently than they had in the past.
Summation
If you’re worried that you’re not getting your fair shake in the ranking system, look at the last 50 games that you’ve played in that hopper. (If you haven’t played 50 games, play more. The system needs more data.)
Take your win/loss average. If it’s 65% or above, and you’ve been in that playlist for a while, you’ve probably increased in level 2 or more times over the last 50 games (or you will in the next 20 or so). Otherwise you are going to be hovering around the same level or dropping in rank.
