One of my favorite things about attending PAX every year is ogling the cosplayers. While it doesn’t even compare to Comic-Con as far as sheer numbers go, there are always a handful of characters wandering around the floor entertaining the swarming crowds. This year the costume I am most looking forward to is Isaac Clarke, the engineer who battles the Necromorphs in the upcoming horror/survival game Dead Space.
I had a chance to see parts of the suit when I attended Dead Space Community Day earlier this month but I am simply quivering in anticipation of seeing the entire costume on a real person. The suit itself, made primarily from carbon fiber fabric, was handmade by Senior Producer Chuck Beaver (seen in the picture holding the equally amazing plasma cutter) during the few precious moments he wasn’t busy working on the game. Nightmare Armor Studios, the same company that made much of the Halo armor we routinely drool over, was contracted to make the helmet. When Chuck first showed us the helmet (which also lights up), it was met with an instant collective gasp of oohs and ahs. After a comment about how it would spice up the bedroom, someone immediately piped up with, “Time to mine some ore!”. (Dead Space pick-up lines, anyone?) Joke about it all you want but take note, well-made cosplay is hawt.
You bet I am going to track down the Isaac Clarke cosplayer this weekend and get some pictures, which may or may not include copious amounts of groping. I will also need to inspect what sort of a codpiece he is sporting, for research purposes of course. Don’t worry, I’ll report back all the pertinent details. While I didn’t actually put the helmet on at the Community Day event, (it would have messed up my hair, which is entirely unacceptable), I did manage to sweet talk Andrew, the Online Marketing Manager, into modeling it. Hit the jump for a close-up of the helmet and to see Andrew’s rather hilarious antics. And don’t worry about the blood on the helmet. It’s just from the first person I asked to put it on who refused for whatever reason.

How can your hair be more important than wearing that helmet?

Considering Andrew was willing to sport it, the decision was quite easy actually. :)

looks like they actually added some wear to the helmet. Is that a tad of blood splatter to?
Posted by bs angel on August 27, 2008 at 7:56 pm
Yes, they did weather it actually. When they got it, it was brand spanking new which didn’t have the effect they wanted. So someone took it home, painted it a bit and added the blood splatters. It looks awesome that way.

I don’t get it why does everyone like that helmet? I find it rather boring *(

Why, Mr. Jones, how can you not love it? It’s the perfect mix of rustic Ned Kelly form and futuristic Dalek alloy. It is the pwn.

Maybe you’ll like it more when I get pics of the entire costume together MR Jones93 sk8. I personally really like the character’s appearance, very gritty yet sleek. And dude, the helmet totally lights up. I’ll mirror Nid’s sentiments and ask how could you not love that?!

Clarke’s helmet is pretty sweet. the best helmets usually are the simpliest. even the chief’s isn’t too out there. im looking forward to playing it on the entire screen instead of the entire screen-HUD space. love how they’re going to incorporate all the little details into either things on his suit or on the gun.

How do you see in that thing? Not very practical for an engineer if you ask me.

It could only be better if you got a picture with Issac and The Chief…

There’s my plate I made. The Dead Space Art Director said he’d get some of them signed for me. Yes, you’ll be able to win one. :) OK, TRY to win one.
