What If, Halo Style: Round 2

Apparently yesterday was Friday and I completely missed our customary end of the week antics. Unfortunately I didn’t make that startling realization until the day was almost over. Not only am I still on vacation (I will be returning home on Monday) but I’m still tired from the Dead Space event as well. I actually was so exhausted that upon returning I needed to go to the spa for an indulgent mineral bath and wrap. Traveling to play video games is a tough job, but I do it for you. Yes, I am that dedicated. Feel free to thank me later.

halo 3 screenshot

While I’m a day late and 80 Microsoft points short (See what I did there? I totally crack myself up!), I have opted to go ahead and do the activity today instead of waiting until next week. So many of your answers were beyond hilarious where I simply can’t wait six more days to highlight my favorites. So first let’s giggle over last week’s responses, then we can discuss yet another pressing question. Off we go!

Last week’s question:
What if you could add absolutely any weapon you wanted to the current arsenal available in Halo 3, … What would it be?

Some of your answers:

  • “I would add a pressure-sensitive plate into the Spartan and Elite armor and helmet that would automatically detonate whenever someone tries to teabag you.” (mendicantbias00)
  • “A sniper rifle that shoots spike or sticky grenades, that way you can stick them from across the map.” (TheChrisD)
  • “Maybe not a weapon but a piece of equipment or powerup that protected me from being betrayed by certain unnamed trigger happy girls for 2-3 minutes.” (Cozmo23)
  • “A “FuckUpYourOpponentsMovement” weapon. Like a sticky grenade, you throw it, it hits your opponents Spartan armor, it scrambles the armor’s programming and disorients them completely for 7 or 8 seconds. Moving ‘forward’ on the joystick makes you go backwards, uncontrollable spinning, etc etc. That’d be awesome and hilarious.” (-S-)
  • “Halo 1 pistol, omgz my life would be complete if it were in Halo 3.” (abstractkid)
  • “Mine would be kind of like the airstrike from CoD4, except that it locks onto a person and then drops a train on them.” (Sane Intolerant)
  • “A gun that when you pull the trigger comes out with a flag that says BANG!” (TemplarComander)
  • “An AT-AT walker.” (Nid)

Can you imagine having AT-AT Walkers available in multiplayer? They could have one pilot and two seats with attached Spartan lasers for passengers to man. Then ghosts would of course need cables attached to them. The battles that would ensue would be epic. I actually feel the need to play Star Wars Battlefront now but before I do that, I will leave you with today’s question: What if you could bring any map from the first two games of the trilogy to Halo 3. Which one would you choose? Don’t even act like you haven’t thought about this before. It took me less than two seconds to know that my choice would be Terminal, complete with the invisible trains from hell. So, what map would you choose and why?

Some form of Blood Gulch, because Halo just isn’t the same without it (no, Valhalla or any similar maps don’t count, you can’t beat the real thing).

And possibly Ice Fields from Halo PC. The map could get somewhat annoying, what with people liking to sit on the bridge, but it took some reasonable skill to drive a warthog on that map, especially if you took the lower path. You had to hit ice field just right to coast across, hit a rock on the other side, and get traction again; when done right it can be very satisfying.

Well, my favorite maps from the earlier games would be Ice Fields (yes, I played PC, and still play CE sometimes) and Sidewinder. One can make the case that we have a Sidewinder now, but I’m being general here.
And while the lack of a Blood Gultch version in Halo 3 did suprise me… Meh, their game, guess they thought we needed to leave the nest or some such.

  14. I would say a redone version of Blood Gulch, except with lots of RvB references/easter eggs thrown in. Plus, it would be cool if one base was a Covenant structure and the other was a UNSC bunker.

I am, however, intrigued by rumors of an as-of-yet-unmade map called Moonbase Alpha. Bungie could do some really cool stuff with that.

And someone actually did build an AT-AT on Avalanche. The map is called AT-AT.

    Two words… Rockets on Prisoner.

Fuzzy math asside, Prisoner is the only example of a vertically oriented multiplayer map that I have ever enjoyed playing on. It has mazing nade traps like the corner round abouts and ladders, great conention points like the rocket/OS spawn in the middle, and it accepts almost any weapon variant without unbalancing.

Of course I would settle for Boarding Action, if only so Hawty would have some new material to work with. I can already see those pickup lines, and my oh my the inkbots…

    Relic.

It was always one of my favorite maps. I liked that it was an island, one that I could almost completely race around the outside of (the only place I couldn’t being the warthog spawn at the albatross). My favorite thing about the map (aside from the fact that Covenant, Human and Forerunner objects/technology are found on it) is that there’s this mystery behind what the Forerunner ‘relic’ actually does. It lit up when you turned the teleporter on… but that’s about it. Otherwise it was just as if it was a testament to the Forerunner’s existence (which isn’t necessary since it was ON Delta Halo). It’d really like to see the map with a face lift, with all the new shiny metalness of the Forerunner buildings in Halo 3. I’d also like to see how funny it’ll be when someone tries to bumrush the behind portion of the building in a warthog (in CTF) and then they meet a power drain and a rocket launcher/missile pod.

-sigh- Now I’m filled with mixed feelings and memories of Halo 2 glory.

Its got the same idea as Rat’s Nest, giving you the option to either take a vehicle or walk, both taking about the same time to get across the map.

Then of course is Terminal from Halo 2, and how could anyone forget Blood Gulch/Coagulation? I would definetly love to see how those would turn out in Halo 3.

  33. Posted by Impervium on August 9, 2008 at 9:39 am

Coagulation/Blood Gulch is number 1, without question. Halo 2 Zombie Survival on Coag… Running across the map with an ever dropping number of survivors, using whatever BR ammo you have left to pick off the hordes of zombies, before being cornerned and making a last stand by whacking the living dead over the head with the flat end of your rifle.

    Good times…

Death Island’s next, then Infitinty. Um… Relic, Terminal, Warlock, and Headlong were also awesome.

Containment, with the huge mines being available as Forge objects.

Gemini, only Flood-infested, with the Truth statue being broken and chunks lying around in the center area. If you went outside the Dreadnought would be gone and High Charity would be much darker. It would basically be what Gemini would look like immediately after the Dreadnought leaves.

Relic would be a very swell map to play on again, but I can’t help but think of the map as a boxed-in map (like Cold Storage) and still Forerunner. We’ve seen boxed-in canyons, but we haven’t seen maps inside a giant box!

I would like to see a blood gulch but that doesn’t go on my list.

I’d like to see boarding Action remade, and Backwash. Boarding action, in combat evolved, was just plain awesome. No imagine if there in the air above the ark or the portal, at night, and theres Hornets and Banshees and AUGH! It would be great. It would also be a chance for Bungie to make a Pelican. For god sakes just make it like the first version of the hornet only bigger and doesn’t respawn after being blown up, THERE, BALANCE.

Backwash was creppy and made me scared to be anywhere in the map, even the tower. It could have Spark again, no one would think it would be a plasma grenade anymore due to the new graphics. Or…now that I think about it. . .

This is actually a tough question. You see, I’m not one of those odd Halo players (yes, you’re all odd) who think that maps like Blood Gulch need to return. We’ve go Valhalla, it fits the description and feel of gameplay, and there’s no Spawn Camping because the maps wide-the-f*** open for no reason… oh, and I thought that Guardian was awesome, and that Blackout was a needless, wastefull addition. I appreciated Avalanche though, as there wasn’t already something like it in Halo 3 yet.

To be honest, I’m really not sure what map I’d really like to return. Any gameplay style is already fullfilled in Halo 3, from small to large and all the Symmetrical/Asymmetrical things you could want.

Hell, the only thing I would like to see is maybe Terminal, as it was was just a cool map with lots of open area, but lots of tight spaces too, or any Covenant map. There’s isn’t a single Covenant based map in Halo 3… which is just… sad. Halo had several, Halo 2 had at least 2, and Halo 3, after 2 download packs and an extra map, has none. They even changed Chill Out (formerly a Covenant map) into a Forerunner-based Cold Storage.

I don’t really want an old map, it’s not something I particularly am hungering for when I think of maps I’d like to play. I want something fresh. I want something new. Something that nobody expects, and hopefully “Purple Reign,” the recently announced map, will be what I’m looking for.

I recently downloaded all the H2 bonus maps to see what they were like (I didn’t have online until I bought a 360), and I like the ideas of them, but they just didn’t feel good (I guess Im used to the ambient features of H3) What really upset me was Turf. It’s supposed to be a city block, but feels just like any other arena. I’d really like to see a city block in H3. with various buildings you can go into that don’t feel like they were placed there, but feel like they belong where they’re at (maybe a couple of houses, a department store, whatever). And obviously make it big enough for light ground vehicles (Warthogs, ghosts, etc; possibly open enough for banshees and the new hornet).

And another thing: Any future maps should still have a budget, but I don’t think there should be a specific limit on any one object. I’d like to make a map with like 8 gauss hogs, but it won’t let me. I should be able to put as many of X as I can that the general budget will allow.

Boarding Action would be pretty cool if kept exactly the same geometry-wise (okay, mix the weapons up a little), except for removing all the teleporters… and replacing them with MANCANNONS. xD How awesome would that be?

Headlong because it was a really nice, balanced BTB map, with that vertical edge to it that’s missing from the current Halo 3 maps.

Halo 1 pick: Boarding action would be a rediculous and fun remake. But to account for the fact that elites aren’t required to wear a vacuum sealed helmet (there are a few sealed permutations however), have it as two parallel ships… in atmospheric reentry! IDK if the engine could handle it, but it would certainly look great…And onr ship be a covenant craft and another one be a human one (pipe dreams… Frowny face )
Halo 2 Pick(s): Turf. H3 lacks an urban blight. I have some great memories about that map. Headlong would also suffice. Ascension was alot of fun, but ther are worthy replacments in H3.
Marathon Series: OK, hunnybunny! is one of my faves. Ive made several iterations on forge but a true version would be freakin’ sweet.

  71. Without a doubt, Boarding Action. It was the ultimate sniper map, something that Halo 3 is desperately lacking. However, the aesthetics in the Halo CE version were somewhat…odd, being two perfectly cut-away ships, as if designed for infantry sniper contests. To make things more plausible, it could be designed as either a UNSC or Covenant ship that has a gaping hole in it, so as to create enough space to shoot across the gap, or simply a UNSC ship next to a Covenant ship, each with holes in their hulls, which would make more sense in team games (one side Human, one side Covenant).

  78. Hmmm, I really wouldn’t know… It’d be fun to have Warlock, Foundation or Waterworks back for the 4-team flag and bomb games :)

    Boarding Action.

We need more UNSC ship levels.

If Custom Edition maps count, I’d go for Coldsnap.

Headlong. Im only getting Halo CE in about 2 days. But I have completed Halo CE, Halo 2 and Halo 3 on legendary with my mate. So Headlong for the moment.

Prisoner: who wouldn’t want to try a spartan laser match on that level?
Boarding Action: without a doubt, best sniper/shotty level ever created. ever.
Damnation: Cool level, best part is the shotgun area. always chaos around there.
Chiron TL-34: best map to destroy the new kid on.

Not enough people wanting prisoner back :(
Where’s all the prisoner love? no, not that kind of prisoner love.
Many of the PC levels were too big, imo.

The map set I would import to H3 would be H1:PC’s. What? You didn’t say “map set”? Only “map”? That’s not possible, there are simply too many good maps. :)

And now for a “how will” question: How will you choose the select answers for this? You are giving us a poll with limited answer choices, so there can’t be any creativity with answers that would single them out for selection.

I’d have to go with headlong. The only city map us console players have gotten, and a damn good one at that. And combine that with forge and infection? Hell yes!

From Halo 1? Chiron TL-34. That’s right, I went there.

  89. I’d just like to second the vote for Death Island and Gephyrophobia from Halo PC.

Death Island was like multiplayer on Silent Cartographer. It was very beatuiful. It allowed for great large team battles with vehicles. It was also very well designed with interesting asymmetries between the two sides.

And no, I don’t think Narrows counts as a replacement for Gephyrophobia. I like Narrows a lot, but it’s at a different scale. Gephyrophobia was designed to have both upper and lower paths that you could drive warthogs across. There was enough room to have 6 warthogs going across at once without running into each other. And then there were the separate high paths on each side with the banshees.

Headlong! Fully Constructed with Highways, catwalks, and tall buildings. Man cannons/grav lifts to replace teleporters.

Or Burial Mounds. I miss that dearly.

Ah, yes, Ice Fields. That should be brought back too.

One of my fondest memories of the map was during a CTF match. I was driving a full ‘hog with the enemy flag along the lower section, because the teamsintel suggested heavy resistance on the bridge. We hit the ice, and slided along when we saw an enemy tank. Tanks had no problems on the ice, whereas Warthogs did. I tried to preform evasive manouvres, but failed because of the low traction. The tank fired, and well, it was kinda funny.

alrite ill be the first. i am hoping to see RAT RACE from halo 1. why didn’t anyone think about this beautiful map?. the rat race recreation on foundry doesn’t count.”eye” need a nice looking map. my 2 reasons follow:
1:rat race is a good all-around map. it could be used for everything. and i mean everything.
2:think of the zombie games in that tunnel! you’d be yelling out “FOR DEDICATION TO THE DEAD BUT NOW LEGENDARY 300 SOLDIERS FROM THE MOVIE 300 *huff* SPAAAARTAAAAAH!”

maybe that was too..excessive.. anyway short and sweet:RAT RACE w00h00..games.mode.zombies..SPAAAARTAAAAH!

  94. Boarding Action.

My favorite map of all time would only be improved with mancannons in the place of teleporters. Shotty Snipers would be incredibly epic on Boarding Action. There would have to be lifts or stairs though, since after Halo CE Bungie destroyed all ladders in the universe.

I second the insanely huge Halo PC maps, I love vehicle combat ^.^

I also second Hang Em’ High, Boarding Action, Blood Gulch, and definitely Terminal, although I think it needs a little bit of remaking, would be nice to be able to easily take a tank though to the assaulting base when the rush isn’t so high and you want the joy of kills…

    2nd? Meh, I don’t care. Halo 3 needs another mid-sized snow/ice map.

I’m still in love with the first game (I only have the PC version, though) so all of my favorite maps are from that.
My first choice would be Death Island, second would probably be Timberland, and my third would be Battle Creek.

When Halo first came out and I was little more than a toddler (I guess that shows how old I am, but that doesn’t have anything to do with anything) Bloodgulch was my very first level. From that moment on I was a Spartan 4 life, until halo 2 where I wanted to be an elite, but now BABY WANT BWUD GUWCH
