The Space is Apparently Dead

If you haven’t seen the newest Dead Space “Lullaby” trailer, put on your big girl panties and give it a watch (it’s hiding after the jump). It has all the necessary elements to thoroughly scare the crap out of you. A haunting rendition of a lullaby playing eerily in the background? Check. A copious amount of blood, guts, and severed limbs flashing in between deceptively calm scenes? Check. The ESRB refusing to approve it for the US region due to extreme gore? Check.
As I find the Xbox 360 to be severely lacking in solid horror games, Dead Space is a game I am very much looking forward to. I will have the pleasure of attending a Dead Space community event early next week which I am very much excited about. I will get to rub elbows with other people who have elbows; it should be fabulous fun. There will be opportunities to ask questions so this is where you come in. What would you like to know about this upcoming scary survival game? Leave a question, and I’ll attempt to get an answer for you. I have only come up with one question so far and that is “So, the space, … it’s dead, huh?” and dude, it took me forever to come up with that. Watch the trailer, change your pants, and then help me out by leaving a question. Now get to it!

this game looks so awesome at the end when it said halloween i thought it was gonna say halo…. automatic reaction :P its the same style as in the fall of reach video
I have no question just thought i would say that your blog posts have been increasingly funnier. Keep up the good work
=D
Um, yeah…I’ll pass on Dead Space. I fail to see, from this video, any originality or redeeming qualities of the game.
Good horror isn’t about showing you blood and guts, it’s about making you scare yourself.
I have been really excited about this game for a while…there is a lo of hype for it so I really hope it doesnt fall flat.
Love this trailer!
I don’t know much about the game. But I do know that i love the trailer, especially the music.
Is there any chance that “Twinkle, Twinkle” will be available without sound the sound effects from the trailer? Even with purchase or something would be great.
It looks a bit scary for me (says the person who gets scared when things jump out during Tomb Raider). It reminds me of Event Horizon, which I found really scary.
Yay it is coming on my birfday!!!
Iagree with El Burritoh. It has all the elements to make one queasy, sure, but its not scary. Scary is giving you just enough to mess with your head: Let your imagination put what’s not really there. Real Scary is a psychological attack, not gory visuals.
I’ve been needing a good horror since FEAR. This looks good.
“Though I know not what you are, twinkle twinkle little star”
Hmm, I’ll rent it, give it a go, and then give my verdict. I’m not saying anything now, cause just seeing the “flaoting dead in space guy” made me shit myself. I fear space, and I fear death. So thus the project lead for this game has some kind of vendetta agaisnt me.
Hmm one question
If the ESRB refuses approval in the US region, is there any hope that this game will make it to Australia? :D
I think the ESRB refused to approve the commercial for the US, not the game.
Are there a lot of games that don’t make it to Australia?
So, what kind of weaponry is there gonna be in the game – a complete arsenal, one weapon (the crossbow-like thingy shown in the early screenshots) that gets upgraded, or just stuff that you put together (a la Alone In The Dark)?
If a game has a puppy that sneezes in the camreas genral direction, the ESRB will jump to give it a good ban.
I am really impressed by how creepy and gorey that was. I need this game.

See, the weapons and equipment that Isaac will find on the Ishimura are fine for certain uses, but won’t have the same amount of power necessary to eliminate some of the hordes found in the depths of the ship. However, because Isaac is an engineer, he can modify the items he collects to become much stronger and more effective. Scattered throughout the Ishimura are workbenches, areas where Isaac can analyze the schematics of weapons and armor to augment their properties. Broken out like an electrical blueprint, Isaac will initially see the basic plan of the item he’s working in, along with a number of circuits that can be connected to unlock additional abilities, like additional weapon power or ammunition capacity.
That’s where the nodes that Isaac collects come in. By using these nodes, you can patch the circuits together in any way you want, making the gear reflect the way you like to play. This RPG-lite aspect to weapon and gear customization means that the way one player goes through the ship will be completely different than that of another player. For instance, one person might work on maxing out their health, air capacity and telekinesis gun, while others will max out their welding guns or other weapons and specialize is significant damage. We found out that by maxing out certain items, Isaac will gain different “abilities”, and that the schematics are so deep and detailed that it will take at least three playthroughs of the game before you’re able to fully complete every blueprint of every item and weapon. Needless to say, that should boost replayability significantly.

reminds me of doom
I find that two main things have the ability to make or break a scary game for me. One being lighting (the difference between Doom 3 and BioShock) and the other being sound. While I do enjoy the gore element, I don’t find it vital in a horror game. So I’m going to wait and see how it all pulls together before I make a final verdict on this game.
You get to modify the weapons in ways you want? Cool. I can’t believe they’ve made a game that caters to the engineers in the crowd. I might pick this up for that aspect alone, even though I typically don’t go for these types of games.
Looks awesome.
