Playing Dress Up With Your Wii

When I see a naked gaming console, it appears to me as a blank canvas for self expression. There are so many ways to customize them these days, from more in depth projects like fancy paint jobs to the inexpensive and deceptively easy process of skinning. With the variety of options out there, there is really no reason to not personalize your beloved console.

My poor, neglected Nintendo Wii has been sitting unadorned on my shelf since I purchased it last August. Entirely unacceptable, I know. That is why I recently decided to dress that poor thing up. She gets tired from serving as a bookend for my Xbox 360 games so I wanted to treat her to a new outfit for her diligent and dedicated service the past seven months.

I have always purchased my gaming skins from Decal Girl as that was simply the first place I bought a skin, but this time I decided to branch out and give a new site a try. Game Face Graphics caught my eye as they have several unique designs. When you shop for skins and accessories as much as I do, you start to notice many sites carry the exact same patterns and designs. Game Face Graphics has skins that I haven’t seen anywhere else before so that is where I ultimately landed to address my Nintendo Wii Skin needs.

My package arrived safe and sound one afternoon, in excellent condition and ready for some action. I haven’t skinned a Wii before (that phrase sounded really bad, thank goodness a Wii is not a small animal) so I kinda just sat there and stared at all the various pieces for a bit. It would have been helpful to have a labeled instruction sheet of some kind (such as having each piece marked and then diagrammed with the proper position) as I had no idea where some of them went. Unfortunately it took me forever to figure out that some of the individual pieces were meant for the Wii base, but I am a somewhat bright girl. Give me long enough (in this case about five minutes) and I will figure it out eventually. Maybe.

The first thing I noticed was the high quality of the skin. Other skins I have put on have been relatively thin and have always needed a decent amount of smoothing and adjusting to get all the air bubbles out. These went on super quick, with minimal effort, and the material was definitely more substantial than most. I’m not sure exactly what they are made out of (their website describes them as being made with a smudge and fingerprint resistant material) but the quality difference was definitely large enough to notice.

The whole skinning process only took me about ten to fifteen minutes (which could have been halved if they would have included a labeled diagram) and was pretty painless. So as I was happily sitting there ogling my new skinned Wii, I noticed their logo on the front panel. To be honest, it is a small and fairly discreet image but it certainly felt like an intrusion. I would definitely prefer a skin that was design only with no logos anywhere to be seen. Or perhaps if it has to be put on, maybe it could be in a more subtle place such as the one of the sides. The high quality of the skin is well worth the nuisance of the logo though.

Hopefully they will continue to put new designs out because they have a great product, just a bit of a limited selection. Speaking of which, my unadorned DS Lite is now suffering from the green eyed monster. It may be time to dress her up as well.

As much as I like the Pink on our Wii I like the beer inspired “Cold One” instead. That would make a great birthday present for you..don’t you think?

I was contract to revamp the GameFace line of skins, to give them designs which could not be purchased anywhere else. There are still afew orginal CF skins online but I’d say approx 90% of htose online are my work. I also do one of kind for individauls as well…
