Xbox 360 HD DVD Player $49.99, HD DVDs 50% Off at Amazon

26 02 2008

Not many people were surprised when Toshiba finally announced that they will no longer develop, manufacture and market HD DVD players and recorders. When Microsoft followed suit with their statement that they were withdrawing from HD DVD, rumors began to circulate about how low the price for the Xbox 360 HD DVD Player would drop. Official word is that you can now expect to pick up this add on for an estimated $49.99 in most regions.

xbox 360 hd dvd player

Features include :

  • Supports existing HD DVD movie discs (more than 400 titles currently available in the US and 1,000 internationally)
  • Xbox 360 Media Remote Control (a $20 value – US ERP)
  • King Kong HD DVD (Available in North America Only)
  • Plays standard DVDs
  • Provides an additional USB port for your Xbox 360 and includes USB 2.0 cable

$50 is actually low enough that I would consider purchasing this right now. An additional USB port sounds nice (it would especially come in handy if I played Rock Band *cough*) and there are tons of sales out there on HD DVDs. The “Get 5 free movies when you buy select HD DVD players” deal is good for a few more days, and Amazon is having a “Save 50% on HD DVDs” sale for a limited time as well. Many of their titles are discounted even deeper than half off so you can find some great bargains in there. Perhaps the time is finally right if you have been on the fence about making this purchase, or maybe it is just time to say good riddance and get a Blu-ray player.

I think it’s definitely worth a buy if you want some high definition movies for cheap, but don’t feel like buying a PS3 (ugh). There are still so0o0o many titles available on HD. I’d get one. :o)

My thought behind having one of these is to protect the main drive from my constant movie playing.

Although I probably wouldn’t want to buy “dead” technology, Eric has a good point. There are a lot of movies on the HD-DVD format that you can now buy for cheap.

Eh…

It’s temptingly cheap, but that means whenever you want to watch them you need to have your 360 plugged in with the HD DVD player attached. That may be fine now, but what about a few years down the road? Either your entertainment system setup constantly has the addon that you hardly ever use (and we all know how angel feels about crap in her living room), or you need to dig it out whenever you want to watch that copy of Blazing Saddles you got for free.

And seriously, Blazing freaking Saddles? Do I really need to see that in 1080i?

Good point Sigafoos, about the clutter, not about Blazing Saddles. LOL …

I’m really torn at this point. It’s a great price and there is already a fantastic library out there, but the fact of the matter is that I have gone this long without needing it, … and it would really just be an indulgence. More than likely I’ll just continue to go without. But we’ll see. :)
