Top Five Reasons to Buy Guitar Hero III (Instead of Rock Band)

Are you teetering on the fence that separates the two highly hyped upcoming musical games? Here are five reasons why you should be a Guitar Hero instead of being part of a Rock Band.

The Wallet Factor
The Guitar Hero III bundle is going to cost you $99.99. Rock Band, which will only be available in the full bundle until early 2008, will set you back $169.99. While $169.99 is a good deal when you factor in all the accessories they are including, if you don’t plan on utilizing all of them, it is money ill spent. Unless you have a tree growing money in your back yard, Guitar Hero’s $99.99 beats Rock Band’s $169.99.

The Quantity Factor
Guitar Hero III currently has 63 confirmed songs with 70+ songs expected at shipment. Rock Band has confirmed there are more than 40 but less than 50 tracks on their soundtrack (that number does not reflect their unlockable songs). While I am not a mathematician, I do have a functioning calculator and you will be paying approximately $1.43 per song with Guitar Hero while Rock Band’s songs will cost you over twice as much at $3.40 a song. More songs on the less expensive game. It doesn’t take a bargain shopper to tell you Guitar Hero III wins this category.

The Instant Gratification Factor
Guitar Hero III comes out in less than two weeks on 10.28.07. You will have to wait almost a full month longer for Rock Band which isn’t available until 11.23.07. In this world where instant gratification is the norm, I want my game and I want it NOW. Guitar Hero wins by 26 days. Or 624 hours. Or 37,440 minutes. Or 2,246,400 seconds. Wow. Looking at the number of seconds, Guitar Hero seriously pwned Rock Band.

The You Factor
Yes, I am talking about YOU. I don’t want to hear you sing. One of my favorite Wii games is Wii Boogie, which has a karaoke feature that allows your voice to come out of your speakers. I have heard myself belting out tunes on surround sound cranked up loud enough to shatter my windows. My singing voice is a cross between a fog horn and a dog howling at the moon with a little bit of fingernails on the chalkboard mixed in for your listening pleasure. You don’t sing that much better than I do. Neither do all the people I have heard singing during various bouts of drunken karaoke. I want to play my music games with the volume turned up. Guitar Hero wins since I don’t have to mute your singing when playing it.

The Ego Factor
One of the main reasons why I will not be purchasing Rock Band is because not only do I not want to subject my friends to the torture of hearing me sing, I also have no interest in playing the bass or the drums. There is not nearly enough glory to be had in playing those two instruments in a virtual rock band. The spotlight needs to shine on me. I am a rock star. I will be on lead guitar. I am a Guitar Hero, hear me roar.

I reserve the right to purchase and enjoy Rock Band upon its release if I so decide. kthxbai.

  2. Wait, what? You’re not going to play Rock Band vocals for me over Live? Some of us LIKE dogs howling at the moon.

    I am sad now.

*considers taking rock band off preorder*

    *decides no*

While your vocals obviously closely match mine, bs dahling, I just can’t bear the thought of NOT torturing my helpless friends and family with the unbearable sound of my hapless vocal stylings.

Torture is still allowed, right? Don’t say Georgie never did anything for you. :D

Well I suppose if someone likes dog howling, I would be the perfect match then. Don’t ask, because sometimes you shall receive.

Talli, how awesome would it be to have the saved films feature that H3 has on Rock Band?! With audio of course! What I wouldn’t give to see and hear some videos of you rocking out. :)

  8. Alright bsangel, who told you about my money tree? I thought I had that thing under lock and key. :) I loved Harmonix’s earlier games, Frequency and Amplitude, but never bought into the Guitar Hero games so far, because of the price.

I play (or played, still got the skill) Tenor Saxophone. Now that Harmonix has moved on to Rock Band, they want almost twice as much as before. Someone let me know when the real game “Saxophone Hero” releases. I might splurge for one of the two, but I’ll guarantee my appearance at this party once the saxophone is introduced. I know its not happening, but dare I dream?

Another good reason to skip Rock Band in favor of GH3: If I’m gonna sing, I want to sing a chick song, and there’s only one on the RB tracklist. I luvs me Courtney Love, but I don’t want to sing Celebrity Skin over and over!

ps I love Boogie too. I kicked ass at Fergalicious!

pps. I want Violin Maestro! Tracks could include Mozart, Vivaldi, and Paganini…

Is there really only one song featuring a female singer on Rock Band’s tracklist? I haven’t even looked that in depth at it, but that is quite disappointing.

They better make that Violin Maestro to make up for that. :)

The less female singers the BETTER. Rock Band pwns Guitar Hero in terms of playability, but then again I’ll be switching between GHII, GHIII and Rock Band on a regular basis. Hooray to not being stuck with only one game!
