PAX 2007 : The Awesomeness that is Halo

28 08 2007

The passion and excitement radiating from the Halo series of video games was evident everywhere you turned at PAX. From Halo-themed gamer gear worn by numerous attendees to the Bungie Store in the Exhibition Hall to Master Chief walking among the masses (which I missed, curses!) to the final round of the Omegathon where they played Halo 3, your senses were bombarded by anything and everything Halo. Yeah, I kinda liked it. Just a little bit. And by a little bit I mean I soiled my pants several times. There are only two things that could have improved my Halo experience at PAX. Those are 1. Master Chief being decked out in pink armor 2. and then having him promptly whisk me away to the deserted beaches of Zanzibar to completely and thoroughly pwn me, if you know what I mean. Wait, did that qualify as over sharing? Forget I said anything. Moving on.

The Bungie Store at PAX had so many awesome goodies. From bags to shirts to bottle openers to everything in between, you could not escape that area without a purchase. They handed out free Halo 3 pens and gum while you browsed as well. The thing I love about official Bungie products is that you know they are going to be high quality. I found a little gem (or lots of little gems actually) in the shirt bins. They had a Halo 3 shirt with the logo on the front made out of crystals. Oh yes, they had a blinged Halo 3 shirt. They must have known I was coming because I’m pretty sure they made it just for me. After I was able to breathe again (I was frozen momentarily from having Halo 3 and bling in the same place at the same time), I promptly found my size and made my first purchase of the day.

Four Cufflinks for the Dressed Up Gamer

27 08 2007

I constantly blog about gamer gear. I love anything gaming related that I can wear. I tend to focus on the female accessories as obviously that is what appeals to me, but after writing about some awesome gamer ties, there were a few requests for more male gamer gear finds. When did you guys get all high maintenance? Seriously, you are a demanding bunch of guys. *shakes head

In honor of all of the male obsessed FPS fans, I went on a search for some awesome cufflinks for you. I had no idea there was such a broad selection available; I really found some neat off-the-beaten-path finds. Some are expensive, some are not. Some are obvious gamer references, some are not. All of them are quite cool. Here are my most favorite four gaming related cufflinks I could find for the dressed up gamer.

Handcrafted PSP Leather Case

26 08 2007

While scouring Etsy for handheld custom cases, I happened upon an absolutely beautiful leather handcrafted PSP carry-case. This is by far the most gorgeous option I have seen for a PSP and it looks very sturdy and durable as well. While I already have a case for my PSP (I use this one and have found it to be great), I just may have to pick this up too because it looks so nice and is extremely reasonably priced.

Sunday’s PAX Agenda

26 08 2007

Today is day three of PAX, the final day of the festivities. It will be spent with a friend who is kind enough to warm my seat in his car every time I ride in it. With that amazing gesture, I can almost turn my head every time he refers to me as RB (his new nickname for me which is short for raging bitch), key word of that sentence being “almost”. I am beyond exhausted as I write this. My days along with my nights have been non-stop. So far I have attended every single panel that I planned on. I am five for five, which is awesome. Plus, I’ll let you in on a little secret : I played Rock Band today. More on that in a different article next week.

These are the two main panels I plan on attending this afternoon :

Gaming with Children
Andrew Bub is The GamerDad, a nationally recognized expert on video games and media violence, and he’s bringing his famed “Smart Parenting & Violent Media” speech to PAX. Come learn the real history of violent media and its true effects on children, learn why games are good for kids and families, and please bring your GamerParenting questions too!

Reversible Pac-Man Earrings

25 08 2007

The creator of the “Reversible Aluminum Necklace, Geek or Chic” Nintendo necklace did it again. SarahLynneDesign’s Shop recently posted an adorable set of reversible Pac-Man earrings.

A little bit about the process of making these jewelry pieces, from her profile :

“My latest endeavor is my two sided aluminum jewelry pieces. I hand cut, drill, sand and polish each piece of aluminum myself. I make most of the designs using silver wire to form the lines of the design and filling them with pigment, somewhat similar to cloisonne. Each piece takes many hours to complete and the glazing process usually takes 3 days per side.”

Saturday’s PAX Agenda

25 08 2007

Today should be another fun filled day of PAX activities. I will be going with a good gamer buddy of mine who has a sweet pet name for me. He calls me a “raging bitch”. Oh yes, our friendship is very special.

These are the three main panels I plan on attending this afternoon :

The Social Component of Gaming Today
The easy communication of Xbox Live and VOIP turns even action games into social events. And outside any one game, publishers must contend with the organism that is the gamer community; the massive social network that roots out and castigates fake blogs, and elevates obscure niche titles like Guitar Hero or Puzzle Quest to stardom. How do publishers address such an inter-connected consumer society? How do gamers (and developers) deal with John Gabriel’s equation, “Normal Person + Anonymity + Audience = Total Fuckwad”?
Speakers: Theresa Pudenz (Flying Lab Software)

What is Your Hourly Cost of Gaming?

24 08 2007

Do you know how much you are spending on various forms of entertainment per year? How about per month? Perhaps per week?

Entertainment is expensive these days. The cost for dinner and movie can easily total a pretty penny. Hopefully you don’t have babysitter charges on top of that. The cost for a baseball game and a few beers at the bar afterwards gets high very quickly. Factor in parking and you have a pricey night on your hands. What about a simple night at the bowling alley with some appetizers in between games? Even that adds up in no time. Let’s face it, all of these price tags are going to continue to put a big dent in our wallets.

jar of money

How does gaming factor into your finances? You have spent a few hundred at least on your console(s). Did you get a fancy big screen tv to go with it? Surround sound to maximize your experience? Numerous games at $60 a pop? More importantly, are you getting your bang for your buck?
