I received this comment yesterday on one of my articles about female gamers. The subject matter was three mistakes that female gamers make that hurt our overall reputation. His sexist comment wasn’t entirely relevant to the subject at hand but instead a reflection (I use that term loosely) on female gamers in general. I didn’t publish it there as I wanted it to receive special attention. I thought it was worthy of its own article. These are his words, verbatim.

You are a girl, and this is a boy’s club. We built it, we funded it and we made it big.
There is no reason you should feel entitled to join our club.
If your gender had submitted anything more than Sims skins, you may be welcomed more often.
There is no glass ceiling in this industry, there are women big-ups, Rieko Kodama is just one of them, but if you ask her, she’s not even into games her self.
And frankly, just because you can play your boyfriend’s Xbox, does not make you a gamer.
Gamers are people who spend a great deal of time and money on getting games, building PCs for games and spending endless time perfecting their skills.
If you want to really earn that title of gamer, you will have to show more than a passing interest in halo, guitar hero or the latest weak attempt at getting non-gamers interested the Wii.
You will have to accept that you are not welcome here in the world of gaming, on the contrary you are seen as an intruder!
And whatever skill you may have, will never be as sophisticated as a man’s, because he’s had years of practice while you, at one point were not interested in games at all.As i said, your gender will forever be ostracized from the gaming community at large, partly because of discrimination, but mostly because your gender never contributed anything other than rude looks while the men of your lives played madden instead of doing what you wanted them to do.
Also, pointing out the fact that you are a girl at almost every point in your blog does little to help your cause.
Besides the few minor typos, I thought his diatribe was actually well written. I get some comments occasionally that don’t get published because they contain the term “faggot” six times in two sentences. This one actually could have been published but I instead opted to respond to it in a more public form in an attempt to help educate some of the more clueless people out there.
While the percentage of women in the gaming industry is still remarkably small, to say women have only submitted “Sims skins” is complete ignorance. To be completely honest, I have no idea what a Sims skin is. The fact that you do scares me slightly. (May I kindly recommend some real life interactions with females instead of only the cyber kind?)
I think you should take the time to look at this article, Whiteguysamurai : The Game Industry’s 100 Most Influential Women. It could probably teach you a thing or one hundred. Women have contributed and continue to contribute to the gaming industry as a whole, in development, in leadership, and also in participating. Another useful fact is that according to the ESA, female gamers over the age of 18 actually make up 30% of the gaming population. We are not quite as rare as you seem to think. Knowledge is power. Take the time to educate yourself.
I know you are young from your references to my “boyfriend’s Xbox” and you being able to spend “endless time perfecting your skills”. In the real world when you are a grown up, your terminology switches to significant other or spouse and you also get these things called priorities which typically include a job of some sort or children (which cuts down on that endless time you currently have). I am actually reassured to know you are younger because that gives me hope that at some point you may actually learn how life works instead of continuing to be ignorant in regards to the opposite sex. You live, you learn. You just need to hit that learn phase.
If you consider my interest in Halo to be passing, I am extremely frightened to think of what you consider hardcore. I have played Halo since Halo CE. I am proud to note that when playing the Halo CE campaign coop with my husband, he was unable to pass the last level driving. After several attempts, I had to take over the wheel of the warthog. My driving brought us victory, which is actually one of my most favorite gaming moments. It was quite a satisfying experience. As of today I have logged 11,175 games of matchmaking on Halo 2 and that doesn’t count the games I have played at LANs or on guest accounts of my friends. My badge as a gamer is undisputed and if anything, it leans a bit towards pathetic on the other side. I am passionate about my hobby and I have no shame from that. I am also confident I could whoop the majority of people’s asses on Guitar Hero as that is another one of my favorite games. I hold the near top scores on my friend’s list for a lot of songs I am proud to say. (If I took Locke and Pony off my friend’s list, I would be higher for every song. Jerks.)

I am 100% sure I have been gaming for longer than you have been alive. I started at the age of two with Pachinko and haven’t stopped since. I have probably played on consoles you haven’t even heard of. And ya wanna know something else? I have been around and gaming for longer than the internet. *gasp* You heard me! I used to help my dad run a BBS board out of our house. I am not embarrassed of my age, nor am I embarrassed of my gender.
Guess who bought every single console that has ever existed in my household? Guess who went out and purchased a 56″ DLP HDTV two days before the 360 was set to be released? Guess who does 99% of the gaming in my family? Guess who also played Madden for a bit? That’s right. I can hit that button to simulate 20 seasons in a row just as good as you can, Mr. Hardcore Madden Player.
I know you want me to hide somewhere and pretend I am not female but that is not going to happen. I am who I am and I love being me. I love my hobbies, I love my passions, and I will never apologize for who I am. I am sorry you are so offended that I don’t hide my gender in my blog but I see no reason to pretend to be something I am not. You say I am pointing myself out as being a female, I say I am simply being a female. I will not hide behind a gamertag. I will not hide behind voice masking. I will not hide behind anything.
I am very sorry your ego is so fragile that you are threatened by girls that play video games. However that is your personal problem that hopefully you will seek help conquering. It has everything to do with you, and nothing to do with me.
I am a female. I am a gamer.

A note to Whiteguysamurai - I tried really hard to take it easy on you with this article. I deleted several harsh statements and instead tried to focus on your enlightenment. I just didn’t find this to be a fair fight. It is like I spawned with a sniper rifle and a shotty while you started with just a needler (a Halo 2 one, not a Halo 3 one). I’m not sure if you will get that reference but unfortunately I don’t play The Sims so I can’t make that sort of analogy for you. Anyways, I will offer you one last piece of advice. If there is any legal way you can do this, try to go touch a boob (and I mean a real one, not a cyber one). I promise it will help with your anger issues and just make you feel better overall. I would also have to disagree with his definition of a gamer. I sure as hell dont spend all my money and time building a super computer to play games at some gigantic resolution. I also dont spend all my time playing a game just to be the best in the world. I play games to have fun with my friends, male or female. Games are a recreational thing for me. If I turn it into a thing I have to WORK at. Then its no longer fun and I will find something else to do.

Nice article as always. I think it is clear to everyone what he doesn’t know what he is talking about. If anything, reading you blog should be proof to disprove all of his theories. I think it’s pretty hilarious to see someone has a thought process that inane. The fact that he uses his gaming hobby as a tool to discriminate against women just illustrates that he’s projecting his own gender issues onto the world as a whole. He comes across as someone who has to use his gaming as an escape from his relationships, which is a shame.
It’s interesting that he feels entitled to some kind of accolades for helping to “build” up the hobby of gaming simply because he’s a guy. The fact that he and others of his ilk (yes, I’m sure he has established a powerful network of people living in their mothers basements) haven’t noticed the winds of change sweeping through the gaming nation just illustrates the fact that they need to get out more. There’s a generation of women out there who grew up playing games just like this guy did. The main difference is, they have better things to do than go on a diatribe against their fellow gamer in order to shore up their own flagging self esteem.
As a lifelong male gamer, I feel dishonored by his words. He seeks to assure this blogger that she is considered an outsider by many. I would assert that he is in fact the true outsider. A gamer who is content with gaming itself and all the skill and the passion involved with it, doesn’t need to attack a fellow gamer for such a backwards reason as gender. He’s really no different than the adolescents on Xbox Live who choose to shower women with profanity and third-rate pick-up lines.

I don’t know why this guy is so angry and upset at female gamers, especially this one in particular. Maybe he tried sending you a friend’s list but that list was full. Or he tried getting in your clan, but that list is also full.
Maybe he is a scorned gamer who fought and lost several times in Matchmaking. You have logged in nearly 12,000 games.
In case he didn’t realize, angel has helped build several gaming communities out there, and is a staple in the Halo Community.

We recruited “bs angel” a long time ago, after she gave this Overlord a silent thrashing when he tried to capture her flag. So, I understand the situation in which you find yourself at the moment. I picked that wrong fight too, once. Well, rather, it was picked for me by a matchmaking engine. That is how gamers seek out opponents that are not artificial intelligence wearing shoulder pads.
My point to you is this… You fight angel, you lose. You made the tragic error of underestimating your opponent on a bunch that is based on your narrow view of the world. Big mistake. Your loss, in fact. She is the sort of gamer you want on your team. Of course, you will have to remain in the “shit out of luck” category, since she is already on mine. We just had to have her. More than an intruder, she was a first round draft choice [to use a parlance that appeals to your hardcore Madden sensibilities].
Angel is our Captain. She leads teams of Gunslingers against Challengers. She picks the team, she plans the attack, she trains em up. She usually brings ‘em home victorious. If she doesn’t, you can count on the fact that her opponents thank her for the good game. People know better than to cross angel - well, some do, at least.
If you are able to carve a more hardcore war story out of your virtual travels as an armchair quarterback, I am sure that I still don’t want to hear it.

If it weren’t for angel, I’d still be dancing around on medium in guitar hero thinking i was the big kid in the sandbox. Her competitive spirit has awakened mine, and pushed me to be a more avid/competitive gamer in that regard. Which i might add, has also made the game more fun than just competing against some faceless names and numbers or simply trying to best my own high scores.
She is also a great Halo 2 player and one of the most enjoyable people to play ChromeHounds with.

I’ve never known gaming to be a “boys” club. I was born into it, raised in it, and live in it. I have news for you young man, half of the world around you is female. Shocking, I know, but they are out there, and they enjoy gaming casually and/or competitively. One day I hope you realize to embrace the diversity gaming brings instead of attacking anyone who isn’t just like you.
There are countries where attitudes like this are accepted. Thankfully for all of us, this isn’t one of them.

Lady gamers add a great diversity to this hobby of ours. Especially in competitive games like Halo 2. They think differently and employ strategies in fresh new ways. This can also extend to the design of new video games too.

As with the first comment, I think Whiteguysamurai has a different definition of what a ‘gamer’ is than the rest of us. A gamer is someone who enjoys video games for entertainment purposes. A gamer is someone who can appreciate a good game, without bias for which platform it was designed on. A gamer appreciates the sophistication of the technology as well as the creativity that goes into game design.
With that definition, I’m pretty sure that’s open to both male and female ‘gamers’. While the gaming population has been dominated by men and boys, that has nothing to do with ability or dedication, but rather more to do with society’s influence. With Whiteguysamurai’s sexist thinking, he must also be an avid sports fan with knowledge and trivia about football, basketball, hockey and baseball. He must also know how to repair a car, know how to do household repairs, and be a great outdoors man. Most have realized that women can enjoy sports, be good at repairs, know about their car, and enjoy the outdoors…so why not game?

he needs to open his eyes and see that alot of the ‘gamers’ are, in fact, women. i see females on Xbox Live all the time (and i get beaten most every time :() and its actually nice to play with them because most of them aren’t as self-centered and egotistical as the boys. you can actually have a game without trashtalking and post-game “OH YOU GOT R4P3D!” comments.

Perfect reponse Angel. Okay number one gaming is not a “boys club.” Us girls are gamers deal with it. I have never built a PC and never will in my life time. I play all sorts or games and I will continue to play games.

#1 To say that the game industry is funded by men alone is ridiculous. I buy games and game equipment all the time. We all do. And don’t girls buy games for thier boyfriends/husbands/children as well?
#2 Gaming is not a “club”
#3 Even the game creators would not agree with you and say “woman should not buy our products or play our games” Its just a ridiculous statement.
#4 Who cares what level of “gamer” you are?! Wether you want to play the sims, Guitar Hero, Halo, GoW, its something most of us do for fun and competition and as a past time. Some are more seriuos than others-and it doesn’t matter. It doesn’t mean anyone is not welcome to play. (Good Grief! LOL!)
#5 We are not the intruders! We are the ones that our husbands/boyfriends/kids join us in playing. We are the ones that joined them in playing-and did not give them the dirty looks you speak of! Our significant others enjoy it!
#6 bs keep posting as a girl gamer with a girl gamers perspective! Why not? It is who you are! You are a gamer, and yes you are a girl! LOL! What is wrong with giving your perspective on things? As for you young boy, I think maybe you don’t like women so much because 1) your mom walked out on you or 2) your moms a wh**re or 3) your mom doesn’t give you enough attention and says here play video games all day because I don’t care about you or 4) all the above.
I am a female gamer and proud of it, I have a son who also enjoys games and we game together. Does you mom do this for you? Maybe you need to be taught how to respect women and your mom never did that for you. I hope you read this and know that YOU are the minority, there’s more men out there that like it when women play games now then not. We are fun and we say crazy things. I think you will probably spend the rest of your life looking for love from a women but they will never give it to you because your father taught you how to be a shovanist pig. Because that’s more about complaining, and less about gaming.

Again, your response is well written. However, I am surprised you backed off so much. To try to crawl back and say you didn’t say anything sexist is odd. All it takes is a simple look at your original comment to see that is not the truth.

If your gender had submitted anything more than Sims skins, you may be welcomed more often.

Sadly, I find one comment that he said true. We WERE invaders at one point. But female gamers have stepped up in large numbers and I see now that all of us are welcome. Males want to dominate. Thats exactly how it goes. And they get upset when they find out that a female is just as good as him . But these men who are still fighting the fact that females game, Should realize that no matter what they say, It won’t affect the female gaming community. They’re going to have to suck it up. I mean, Look at the PMS clan. They’re gaming females AND are welcome to go to MLG tournaments in plenty of places. KSI Vixerns and KSI Sirens are pretty high up there too.
No one has any right to tell another gamer, which they are, the right to game. Gender does not matter.

I stand by a statement I made in my initial response, the issues he has with female gamers has everything to do with him and nothing to do with us.
I love gaming and am extremely passionate about it. I can tell a lot of other females posting here are as well. The gaming community as a whole is a wonderful place to be. Negative people such as this guy will continue to find themselves on the outside.

I think it’s funny but sad when guys think there so much better at a game just because there guys. Like they were born to do it or something. I say any guy who really think that is true hit me up on Halo 2 and ill take your pride away.
As a male gamer, I have to say that this kind of male makes me ashamed of my gender sometimes. Frankly, I say that if I was sitting there playing Halo with a group of friends, and a female sat down with us and grabbed a controller and then proceeded to kick our asses, I would be totally for it. I find a female that can trade insults and comments while showing off any amount of skill in a FPS very attractive. And more power to them as well! Everyone is equal in my perspective. Just don’t complain about me picking on you when I come up behind you and gib your head on my sword. I do that to everyone.
Anyway, this guy’s a idiot, probably not even in high school yet. I’ve seen plenty of strong women who can beat me, be it physically, mentally, or gaming-wise. I admire these sort of women, and wise them well in everything they do.

Who cares if someone doesn’t spend their “life” playing games, hasn’t owned a console since they were a toddler and doesn’t own every game ever made.
Being a gamer is exactly that - if you play video games frequently YOU are a gamer. There are lots of MALES who are also inexperienced, play less often than not and haven’t played since the dawn of time — this doesn’t mean they don’t have the “right” to call themselves a gamer. Since when has this title become such a huge deal? Is there some ‘coolness’ factor I’ve missed out because I’ve been too busy actually playing games to pay attention to the title of ‘gamer’ and where/how it should be applied?
I’m not a fantastic gamer, but I have won my fair share of rounds and have enjoyed countless hours on my OWN Xbox console. If some unseen entity has declared that I am not really a gamer, then so be it.. I don’t care, I’ll still play games when I feel like and I’ll still enjoy them.

Super pwned! In paragraph form! I thought gamers are just people who play games. There isnt any specific title to “gamer” right? My brother (7) plays games, horrible at it, but I consider him a gamer. My cousin is a female gamer, played halo just the other day with her, ok at it but i still consider her a gamer. I choose her to play in coop with me than my brother (sorry brother).
I have no xbox. I am good at halo, halo2, and some other games. NOTICE i did not say pro. But i win most of the time. I have halo for the PC but it is not installed. Im good at it too. I play halo and halo 2 off my friend’s xbox. I may not be a true gamer at halo because i do not have an Xbox. One big piece missing. But, I play games alot, so i guess that means i am a….. i dont know, a peasent gamer without and xbox? I have a gamecube and Resident Evil 4, and thats all. What is a Gamer? What is the true meaning to a Gamer? I think a True Gamer is a person like bs angel. One who fights for there right to be called a gamer…and succeeds….or something like that. this is stupid im not writing anymore, my brain stopped thinking. Im going to my friends house. bye bye.

Ugh, even beyond the whole sexist part, if there’s one stupidity that annoys me among the gaming community as much as console fanboys, it’s people who posture about being “true” gamers versus the apparent “fake” and “casual” gamers they think they’re superior to. Gaming is not a contest to see who is more “hardcore”, why don’t you try beating your chest over something that’s not completely inane?
I taught my man how to properly heal, and play WoW in genera, after he’d been noobing it up for years. I’m the one at the store going, “but honey, the Nintendo DS is for gaming ANYWHERE YOU WANT, I wants one!” And he still doesn’t get it. I’m the one downloading random games to try and I’m still teaching him how to play Oblivion. I installed AVG on his lame ass fucking VISTA machine and I configure our wireless router.
And this is a man who was a Tradewars champion, in his day.

Ya know some of my fondest memories were down in the basement with Mom and her friend playing Space Invaders. She would scream and then Mrs. C would scream and we would all laugh hysterically at how crazy we’d all get because some little fuzzy space creatures were getting too close to the bottom of the screen….good times!
